  1. My goal is speed and efficiency, preferably using ffmpeg or other utility & a script. Recode using H.264 or H.265 video codec and AAC audio codec to make file-sizes smaller, but with little-to-no loss in picture/sound quality. A script that includes deleting original MPG file is an added bonus. This script has to search and find all *.mpg files in the main folder and all sub-folders, convert them all to MP4 files, and then leave them in their respective folders. I would like to keep original filenames (no *-convert.mp4, for example), just with new *.mp4 container/extension. Step-by-step instructions on where to place necessary files/installations (ffmpeg, codec, and script, for example) before running the script would be great. Thanks for everyone's input.

  2. That script should not delete those originals, be careful about that.

  3. There's a thread here with many many posts about batch processing with ffmpeg, including how to process files in all sub-folders.

The problem you are going to have is the variation that can occur in MPEG files, true interlaced material, progressive encoding with soft pulldown, hard pulldown with interlaced encoding, field blended PAL/NTSC conversions, etc. The best quality requires analysis of the video and processing it correctly. Or you could just encode them all interlaced and live with the results.
