Hello. Newbie here, so please be kind. I'm trying to convert a mp4 video to AVI-DV in order to edit it per frame. I've read this post (https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/288110-Suggest-a-video-editor-for-frame-by-frame-editing) and some useful advice was provided.

When I try to convert the mp4 file (format H.264, AAC, 44.1kHz) to AVI-DV using XviD4PSP the resolution is poorer (fuzzier) or the playback speed is accelerated. Happens converting to both AVI-DV PAL or AVI-DV NTSC.

Can anyone either suggest a similar format to convert to or another converter program (preferably free or low cost) I could try?

    Thank you

  2. PAL DV supports only one frame size, 720x576, and one frame rate, 25 fps. NTSC DV only supports 720x480 at 29.97 fps. If your source doesn't fit those requirements it's not suitable for DV. Use something else like uncompressed YV12 or the lossless UT Video Codec.

  3. I find using Grass Valley HQX as an intraframe intermediate format very useful. It doesn't have any specific frame size limitations, and creates files that are much smaller than uncompressed or even many lossless formats. quality is as least as good - probably better - than DV.

It's available for free, so maybe worth a try?.....see HERE for details on where to find it and the useful associated converter utility.........(You won't need the information in the other pages of that guide in this case)

Thanks very much for that. These formats aren't supported by XviD4PSP - any suggestions on a converter?

Thanks, I'll give it a go. Presume as an .avi file I'll be able to continue editting in Avidemux.

Thanks for all thoughts - converting to YV12 / AVI through Avidemux then editting and converting back to MP4 worked. All the MP4s were in the same resolution so I get that helped. Thanks again.
