If you are a content creator, then I readily admit that a mobile device is rarely sufficient. Of course, that doesn't stop the mainstream media from using smartphone video in their broadcasts even when people record in portrait mode. But only a very small niche of people are true content creators. The lion's share are content consumers. And good thing too, otherwise no one would ever get paid. But I digress. Creators don't use PCs. They use workstations. And production houses attach those workstations to servers. Technology is moving fast. Acquisition formats are moving away from HD to 4K+ in 12-bit+ and 4444 raw formats. No PC is capable of handling that. The users on this forum are fixated on tools of the past like Avisynth which I suppose is fine if you are ripping or recording HD 4:2:0 content. But the market has no interest in supporting those activities.
My guess is your PC is really a HEDT that is much more powerful than a $500 off-the-shelf box. And you probably style yourself as a content creator. Neither of those criteria will soak up the market's supply of cheap PCs. And if your box is more than a couple of years old, then you are part of the problem. Content consumers don't need and don't want PCs. Their mobile devices are more than sufficient for what little content they do create (periscope, instagram, snapchat, etc.). Because for consumers, if the content can't be immediately shared via social media, then it may as well not even exist. So even though they are consumers, they get it. What is the point of creating any content if no one is paying attention? You have to go where the eyeballs are. The dollars always follow after.
EDIT: As I was typing this post, this commercial came on TV. And I thought it was very interesting. How many desktop PCs can you count in this ad?
