Extract subtitle with handbrake

Hy everybody,

I have a small issue, hopefully you can help me. I have a DVD, which I wanna ripp it with Handbrake, for a smaller size. I want to use handbrake because I like the quality of the ripped movie. Until here I succeeded with the tutorials from web.


The problem is I wanna get and subtitle in a separate srt file, but I have no idea how to do it. I transform the movie in a mp4 file. I've got some srt files from the internet, but after 5 minute of playing or they are to fast or they are too slow.


The DVD has 25 FPS ( I've checked with media Info on a VOB file from the DVD ). All subtitles I've found are 23.796 FPS. I tried to transform the movie at 23.796 FPS with HanBrake, but the result is the same.


Can you help me with an idea how can I get a subtitle for the movie ( I wanna mention, that I want to be a romanian subtitle, which I can get it from the DVD )?

If you succesfully made a MP4 video and have a SRT subtitle file you can synchhronize it with Subtitle Edit(SE). The fps doesn't matter since SRT are time based - not frame based.

If your DVD has the subtitle you want SE can do OCR and convert them to SRT. Here the fps matters since the subtitles on the DVD are frame based. Just remember to install the dictionary and Tesseract file for the language.

You can use the old vsrip to rip the subtitles to sub/idx image subtitles. Or try Subtitle Edit for dvd vob directly to srt subtitles.

There are various tools that claim to theoretically be able to convert subtitles between various frame rates, but the few times I've tried to do this I have NEVER been able to get the final subtitle output to be in sync and gave up trying to fix the sync issues after spending a lot of time on it. We've had reports from some people here who swear that they've been able to use these same tools and have it work for them. All I can tell you is to try one of the tools that claims to be able to convert frame rates and hope for the best, but if your output isn't in sync, there's not much you can do about that. Honestly, it's probably easier to convert the video from 25 fps to 23.796 than to convert the subtitles frame rates and have them stay in sync.

Thank you for your quick answers. I've installed Subtitle Edit and seems to work, by choosing to extract the subtitle via OCR via Tessa.. ( I don't know the right word ). I will need to verify each line, but that's ok. I will see how is working. I'll update you as soon as I finish.

So I guess you made the OCR.

Just a hint for future use. The default for Subtitle Edit is to prompt you for unknow word. These are often names of persons, places etc in the movie. You may choose "Add to user dictionay" avoiding being prompted each time they occur (and you may delete them from the user dictionay from time to time)

And that would be being extremely careful IMO . You could always watch the movie in SE ticking the "Select current subtitle while playing" and jump directly to any subtitle you find erronously.
