I am trying to sharpen a PAL black and white video in FCP.
Everytime I put the sharpen filter on a piece of video it looks worse.
The existing grains in there are amplified.
Is there a good plugin for FCP, filter or piece of software for Macintosh that could help me sharpen my video ?
How can you restore really bad videos and sharpen them ?

    Thanks for the time !

    Thanks for the answer.
But this seems to be for stills and not video.
Is there any other image enhancing, restoration filter one could recommend for moving images in Mac.

    Thanks again.

  4. I don't use FCP, but the same filter can't be used for video?

  5. But it is for video, that' s why it's listed under video filters

Maybe you need to do other things like denoise before sharpening ?

If it's "really bad video" like you claim, maybe there' s not much you can do? GIGO

Some parts have a lot of grain in them and I like to sharpen it.
    But it isn't very bad.
And my question was not about how bad my video was, but that I would like to learn about more options to restore it.
The tip before is very interesting but, if possible, I would like to know other filters, especially some that work with FCP (plugins).
And if FCP is not the first choice for restoring video, I would like to know what software would be better (on Mac and if unavoidable on Win).
I have recently seen documentaries with footage from 1920s and they where recolored and I assume restored.
I am sure that if it is possible to digitize, restoring and recolor these, there might be something out there aiming at old TV videos.
    That is the direction.

    Thanks.

  7. Provide more information on what's specifically wrong with your video (e.g. post a video sample), and you will get better answers

You asked about about sharpening, so you got a reply about sharpening

FCP isn't the first choice for restoring video, its a non linear video editor.

You can use dedicated restoration software, but they are very expensive e.g pfclean, davinci revival, hs-art diamant . Their primary goal is restoration, non video editing (unlike FCP) , so they have specific workflow, filters, rotoscoping and layer tools

There are free tools, but most of the good ones are PC based (e.g. avisynth). Look in the restoration forum for examples

This OS X 10.6+ application is designed to clean and remove video noise, video distortion, blank spaces, static, and user defined frames from video files.
