  1. Hello All,

I need to capture a video stream and I am using VLC player to capture the video stream. The video is stored on a corporate server so I have to be on the LAN to play the video. My problem is our WAN connection is not the fastest so when I stream and then capture the video, there are pauses in the video which are captured along with the video. I am watching the video in VLC player and or Media player.

    So here are my questions.

    1. Is there a better way to capture the video than VLC player? I need something that is free preferably but I will pay if I have to pay.
    2. How do I removed the pauses?

    Thanks, Bill

Is this a training video of some kind? Is this a broadcast of some meeting?

I would get in touch with your IT department and ask for the original video. They should be able to provide you with a compressed copy of it.

An alternative would be to use streamtransport but I would be concerned about putting internet software on a company computer. It would be best to get the original file the correct way through official channels.

Also why do you need the file itself? Aren't you always connected to the network? Or is this to use in some other manner on a device that won't be connected to the network? I'd get clearance before doing something extreme if this is company property (intellectual property that is). Edit - sorry forgot the slow connection speed issue. Shouldn't it buffer itself and then play smoothly after the buffer fills up?

Thanks for the reply. The reason I need the file is we are going to be showing the videos during breaks and we will not have access to a LAN or wireless network. We are using the PC to show the Powerpoint for the meeting. I understand what you mean by using streamtransport on a work PC. I don't want to risk installing an app that has spyware or worse. We have contacted our marketing department but we are a large company so lets just say it is tough to find someone who can help us. Our IT department would probably not be much help either. I was able to get many of our commercials from youtube but there is one remaining which I cannot find.

    Thanks, Bill

Well as far as I know it doesn't have any. I have it installed on my home pc and I have adaware and norton antivirus installed and it has no issues with streamtransport. Its just I don't know about your companies policies on that matter.

I am afraid I do not know of another alternative without installing specialized software. Perhaps someone else can oblige.

edit - there is a trick to get a flv from the computer harddrive after its played. I forgot how to do it but there is a way after it has played. I'd google on that method.

  5. Have you tried the simple things first? Check your browser cache after viewing the videos. The files may be there and you can simply copy them elsewhere. Try Firefox with the Download Helper plugin. It may be able to download the video files. Either of those two methods will get you copies that are identical to the files on the server.

Then come the more complex methods: StreamTransport and RTMPDump
