So I am sick of these codec packs & want to just install the codecs I need. I'm totally new to this so any help is greatly appreciated.

    What I am looking for:
    XviD, DiVX, MKV, MP4 & FLV playback for 32bit & x64 applications.

I am currently using XviD-1.2.2 x64 Stable release & am liking the results of that so far with XviD & Divx playback handling. But I can't seem the find codecs that support the other formats for x64 applications like the x64 WMP.

Also what type of codecs/filters are needed to do encoding & decompression in VirtualDub? I'm am testing out x64 editing, but I can't seem to compress to XviD or any other formats except old standard AVI compression types.

Thx in advance for any info you can offer...

No need for any external/seperately installed codecs for MPCHC, VLC or KMPlayer. My preference is MPHHC 64-bit. (Though the latest install complians about my DirectX being out of date... but, everything still works. Haven't looked into why it's happening yet.)

For VirtualDub you'll need to have the older VFW version of the codecs. Both Divx and xvid should be easy enough to come by, and use, if installed correctly.
    Have a good one,

Yeah, I know about VLC & I do love it, but VLC doesn't offer an x64 version (x64 has very little difference from x86, I know) and my main concern was getting this stuff working in Media Center & x64 WMP.

Sadly the DivX codec would not load in VirtualDub x64 for some reason. But in VirtualDubMod (which is 32bit), it lists a "DivX 6.9.2 codec (2 Logical CPUs)" that can be used for encoding.
I assume that this is the x64 codec? Or a semi-x64 codec? Just found it very odd that it wouldn't load in VDub x64...
But no worries, I found a solution to my particular dilemma.

FFDshow tryouts. I just installed one of the x64 builds found here and lo and behold, VDub x64 can now decompress DiVX & pretty much any AVI I throw at it as well! I did disable FFDshow tryouts' XviD capability because the x64 XviD codec I found is much faster & includes a VFW version for Compressing to the format... Which is exactly what I need! Basically I wanted VDub to be able to decompress any AVI & encode to XviD, which it does now. I also wanted my x64 WMP & WMC to play pretty much anything, which they do now thanks to FFDshow tryouts & the x64 XviD codecs. I also kept the DiVX codec for the ability to compress to DiVX within VDubMod, even though I'll probably rarely use it, because it also seems to have fixed my DiVX Web Player in Google Chrome

So everything seems good for now! Thanks for telling me I need VFW codecs, as that led me to this thread, which solved my problem in a round-about way...

Download the DirectX Web Installer and run it. Vista and 7, by default, only include a bare minimum (if at all) of the DirectX 9 components, which programs like MPCHC and others look for. The Web Installer will install the rest of the DX9 components, and update any of the DX 10/11 components, if necessary. It's usually a good idea to run it every once in a while, even if you believe your DirectX setup is up-to-date.

True. Even though it is the best codec pack I've ever used.
Minimally invasive, yet good results & more control than other Codec Packs.

There is just no x64 version, so it's usefulness in x64 apps is zero.

  8. just in case of lossless codecs,
you may wish to give a try to HuffYUV and Lagarith by Ben Rudiak-Gould.
