Hi all,
Having a problem with the above mentioned printer. I cleared a paper jam by removing the sheet of paper without tearing it in any way. Since clearing that jam the printer is unable to see the cartridge, error message, install cartridge. Have removed it several times, reinstalled it and still receiving that message. I would appreciate help from any member who can throw some light on the possible cause.

It looks like you had the same problem in 2006. How did you resolve it then?
-
I didn't solve the problem then, I just put the printer on a shelf and didn't try again until now. I must thank you for the date because I had no idea how long it has been sitting on the shelf.

Maybe a scrap of paper is covering or jammed in a sensor.
Get a soft brush and brush all around the paper path, blow the dust out of it.

Hi aedipuss,
I did a cold reset as per the instructions below, still showing NO CARTRIDGE.
Newer Models (2300, 2400, 4200, 4250/4350, 4300)
1. Flip the power switch to "Off," then to "On."
2. Press and hold the "Check Mark" button when the display shows the printer is performing its memory count.
3. Release the button when the printer's LED lights stay lit.
4. Press the "Up/Down" arrow keys until you locate "Cold Reset."
5. Press the "Check Mark" button to reset the LaserJet.

Hi Alan,
The link produced an proxy error, unable to go to that site.
I have a friend with a compressor and air hose, my next step will be to blow where-ever possible as suggested.
Thank you for taking time out to help, APPRECIATED.Last edited by blinky88; 27th Oct 2010 at 04:29.

HP sensors are often a small plastic flag that is pushed between a small u-shaped sensor. Often when removing a jam the flag is dislodged or knocked off it's axle. An exploded diagram will show you the location of the sensor. It is also possible the connecting wire was pulled loose.
Always remove a jam in the direction of normal paper flow, whenever possible. -

Nelson and Alan,
Thank you guys for taking the time to help, it is really appreciated. Alan, I don't know how you are finding all the links you are providing, I am now thinking I might be able to actually fix it. My friend is coming over tomorrow night with a compressor and together we are going to give it a thorough clean. I haven't been able to locate an exploded diagram of the sensors location at this time but I'll keep looking.
You know this has been a bad experience for me. I had a forced retirement 12 1/2 years ago because of spinal surgery that didn't go as it should resulting in 20 hours a day 7 days a week laying on my back, that is how things are today no improvement. I bought it off Ebay in 2006 for $400 and it was AS NEW very low page count. I ran a hard copy of the manual thought it during which I had a paper jam. I managed to remove the paper intact no tears and then it came up with the error INSTALL CARTRIDGE. I got in touch with the dealer and he didn't want to know or help, very little I could do, so I simply put it on a shelf and forgot about it. My Epson Stylus 900 spit it's dummy the other night and rather than buy a new inkjet I thought I would see what can be done with the HP, that's the story with this printer.
It's tough when life as you know it stops overnight, no more work, mortgage to pay and debts had to be cleared. I managed to keep almost everything I had and stay in the black. The only reason I want to fix the problem myself is regardless what company I choose to repair it they are going to rip me off. I am now in my 70's and cannot afford that .... also, today you can buy a Laser Printer for around $100 or so.
If I can get this HP going on my lonesome I will be an extremely happy man to say the least.
Thanks again.Cheers from downunder. -
Should be in the service manual PDF I linked to.
I don't have that model, but I've had several different laserjets and the manuals, once you find them, are comprehensive.
The guys at fixyourownprinter are knowledgeable, if sometimes brusque.
They promote a number of repair kits they sell, but you aren't required to buy them. -
Gave it a good blowout tonight, installed a new genuine cartridge several times .... still INSTALL CARTRIDGE.
Given up now have decided to throw it back on the shelf and go down the street and buy new one <$100. If I thought I could get atech. out here to fix it for $90 I would take that option however, ie most unlikely to happen.
Thanks to all who replied.Cheers from downunder.
