    I thought of trying H x264 compression.

Can you tell me how can i use this compression. I don't see any option in compression tab of Virtual dub like Xvid is shown.

I want to use feature like logo.vdf and vsfilter.vdf with this.

  2. If you want to use h.264 compression in VirtualDub you need to install a VFW based h.264 codec like x264vfw or ffdshow.

You will also need to study this:

    http://mewiki.project357.com/wiki/X264_Settings

since x264vfw doesn't have an instruction manual.

  4. At least the latest version has Presets and Tunings.

  5. I am not sure how to work on it, link is also dead in the clickable link to x264vfw, going to site has many downloadable files. Don't know which to pick.

Is there no pictorially friendly application, I don't know but that documentation is hard to understand. It has no start, may be i don't know proper software.

Until a couple of months ago, there was a (somewhat outdated) x264VfW Encoding Guide by DeathTheSheep, but now it seems his site has been abandoned. I will look for a copy of that page on my messy collection of CD-Rs and DVD-Rs and will upload it A.S.A.P.

  7. It just opens for 1 sec and closes, that above link.

Which format Xvid or x264 is accepted by all systems and run freely.

There is something wrong with your web browser,

OR with your Internet Service Provider

You could try to access it thru a public proxy server.

You just need to install the encoder by clicking on it, then open VD and it should be on the codec/compression list. If that doesn't work, you either have the wrong file or it's corruputed. I just installed it and it worked fine with VD on a W7 computer.

  12. x264vfw will be easier for you to use since it has presets to choose from.

  14. You are running the command line version of x264. That is not what you need to work with VirtualDub. You need to download and install x264vfw:

    http://komisar.gin.by/old/1732/x264vfw.1732kMod.generic.x86.exe

That's the version for 32 bit Windows and 32 bit VirtualDub. Once you have installed that x264vfw will show up in VirtualDub's compression dialog.

  15. What are the tabs that I have to use, I want my file to be sized down from orginal with preserving quality by high CPU and time usage.

Is x264 or Xvid better for different media players. Which can be also used in TV with DVD reader.

  16. If you want maximum quality and don't care how long it takes use the "Placebo" Preset. Under Tuning select the type of video you are compressing. Profile and Level can be left at Auto. If you want a fixed file size and don't care so much about quality use Multi-pass bitrate encoding. If you want quality and don't care so much about file size use single pass CRF encoding. They are two sides of the same coin: when the two methods produce the same file size, the quality is the same.

Be advised that there are two different versions of x264vfw out there: MasterNobody's (as seen in post #12, currently using x264 rev 1713) and komisar's (post #17, rev 1732). Until recently, both used the same GUI, but recently MasterNobody went to the stripped-down single-page GUI with presets and little else. I prefer the old one, where I can more easily see and change what's being done, so I went to komisar's (which is also updated much more regularly).

If you want to be using the more current revision or you want more option visibility, use komisar's. If you'd rather click a preset and be done, use MasterNobody's. Both are perfectly fine.

    Best,

    Calidore

Good. You can advise him on all the settings.

  21. jagabo,

Could you advise on the settings needed for creating an MKV from a DVD ripped to a folder with DVDfab HD Decrypter.
I would like to simply stream the AC3 5.1 audio track and compress the video to a good quality using CRF 18 and
'veryfast preset' with the x264vfw codec you are using. What would you recommend for the b-frame setting, and how
would you set it. Also, how do you 'save' the file as an 'mkv', so that mediainfo properly shows the file as 'format MKV' and
    not 'format AVI'.

    Thanks.
