    Can someone suggest me the best freeware or shareware to encode rm to avi (Xvid-MPEG4) to the highest quality ?

    Depending on how the file(s) will be used/displayed, why convert at all? Any conversion will reduce quality.

    You could add a RM codec by using Real Alternative Player. Then using a simple AVIsynth script, open the RM in VirtualDub or VD Mod and encode to Xvid. It's a lot easier than it sounds and uses freeware tools. And it also can preserve most of the quality, depending on your encode settings.
