  1. Here's another recent video in stereo, added September 26, 2008:

    "Coldplay: Lost"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-RjMRP5IbI

What's going on? Is stereo allowed now?

That must be another &fmt=34 video. I do not understand why Youtube chose 22khz again. For 32-40kbps AAC+ 44khz may be a bit too high, but 32khz is really reasonable with this bitrate. Ah well, as long &fmt=18 remains 128k 44khz stereo I remain content, though some better coding would surely be appreciated as well.

No, just upload in an as high quality as possible. Youtube will convert everything in different formats . As codecs you should use H.264 and AAC sound in the .mp4 container, but everything will work.

Something BIG is happening! Youtube has started displaying videos in wide screen format - even older videos. And in the original stereo. And the video looks sharper (no adding extra URL tags).

And when did the "audio preview" start?

No, it downloads a different version, the "&fmt=18" version.
To conveniently download new HQ conversion from YouTube, see my post here:

In that topic, i refer to the link that every YT downloading tool links too :P

I wish I had known how to upload videos in widescreen. I see even videos from last year are showing in widescreen now. I just stuck black bars up the top and the bottom, which turned out to be a bad idea, as now i've got black bars top , bottom, left and right. ARGH!

    here's a 1year old video in widescreen

Heh, I thought something was wrong with my browser at first since it didn't work in Internet Explorer for me and they didn't update the embed code to correspond to the new dimensions. Regardless, this is really cool, I never thought I'd see this kind of quality from YouTube.

Doesn't look real great to me. You have to watch some more standard quality widescreen videos. They've reduced the resolution from 320x240 to 320x180 and increased the percentage of upscaling. That combination doesn't produce better quality. Instead of reducing the vertical resolution they should have either increased the horizontal resolution and bitrate or produced a 320x240 video to be upscaled anamorphiically by the player.

Youtube did something strange with my formerly 128kbps mp3 file in a unconverted flv upload. I heared that its sound quality was severly reduced so I downloaded it and checked it with SUPER media analysis. It says it is now '67kbps 44khz 2 channel'. It does not say the format, but from the sound of it, it is mp3. Very strange... they make it 64-80kbps mp3 stereo now? Bleh, then better make it 64kbps mono with 44khz.

Listen how bad the re-encoded file sound, very scratchy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVy17yc6wzE (English subtitles can be selected ).

Nice guitar playing! The first one is indeed stereo, which seems to mean there is a way to upload stereo as the default! I hope someone can figure this out! What format to upload for stereo?

Thanks. The only thing I can tell you is that each video was treated identically.

I was referring to the &fmt=22 option. Have you watched a &fmt=22 video in widescreen? It looks great. I just wish they could put some effort forth on cutting down the loading time.

standard quality videos streamed from google have been re-encoded to 320x240 and 22khz stereo. standard quality videos streamed from youtube servers have not been re-encoded and are still as you uploaded them. It's probably just a matter of time before they are all relinked to google.

Well this was a video using the HQ hack (keeping bitrate under 333k) which is now obselete. I do not know how it landed on google's servers?

The new &fmt=22 format OWNS, and for some reason the test video I uploaded streams quite fluently unlike the majority of other 720p uploaded videos I tagged &fmt=22 onto.

Here's my test video in format 22:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY7vF1dVFN4&fmt=22

In regular high quality, the quality isn't really impressive unfortunately. It's perhaps worse than regular high quality 4:3 videos (since the resolution is wider and the bitrate would likely remain the same)... but &fmt=22 just simply looks astonishing.

If only YouTube were to implement this format in their player somehow without people manualling affixing the fmt bit at the end, maybe add another option in the quality settings for "watch in super (or HD) quality".

Because youtube re-encoded your old video and put it there, then relinked it. standard quality stereo videos come from google servers. I've removed quite a few videos of mine due to quality loss related to re-encoding.

I don't know if you guys are interested, but I uploaded a video in what I think is True HD:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeUgPL5lzno&fmt=22

Info on the video is in the description!

No hacking (besides &fmt=22) was involved. So YouTube, I know you're watching all of our posts. This isn't a hack in any way, so please don't kill this "method". And if you add a feature to your player that allows you to simply click something and watch the video in the highest quality possible, I'd love you more than I already do!

Anyway, tell me if you can do better! (Meaning upload a Higher-Quality video)

By the way, I'm not trying to infringe any copyright by uploading the trailer! In fact, it's kinda like free publicity, so it's a good thing I uploaded it!

[This video was rendered in Sony Vegas Pro 8.0! No other programs were involved!]

  23. I've uploaded this Vid.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYoehwh58xo&fmt=22

seem new era of fmt=22 is now applicable for HQ view.
    what do u guys think?

    SPEC:
    Resolution - 1280x720 (16:9) Converted from 1920x816
    Bitrate - 2500Kbps
    Audio - AAC 192Kbps

    Error is JUSTIFIABLE

Don't you have the competences to understand what I wrote ?
The video from my link has STEREO on both options - high quality and standart quality
Check out at the 0:18 second of the clip!

  27. Of course, don't be rude. So does mine. Duh. Competences? Lol!

Omg, are you joking or you are really fooled...
Do you understand the meaning of "stereo" ; "both options" ; "high quality"
    Think about it!
The video from my link plays &fmt=18 (not &fmt=6) automatically by clicking on "watch in high quality"

Stereo dude, I am talking about stereo..., not mono as in your video while played in high quality mode
Yes, obviously you don't have competences to find difference between stereo/mono.
