Just curious are your "problem" dts files by chance dts-ma files from a bluray source? You could simply use eac3to and extract the core. Than it would be like working with normal dts files off a dvd. That SHOULD make it more compatible with a wider range of programs that might not recognize hd audio sources.Originally Posted by pmshah
Worth looking into if that might be the case.

I never work with Bluray source. My experience was mostly with 2 channel DTS files that someone else had ripped. To make my files compatible with widest range standalone players and wide range of PCs my final settings generally are- 720p, 2000 kbps mpeg4 ASP video and 384 kbps 5.1 AC3 audio with DRC within MKV container.
I have also had occasional problems with AAC audio which too this software handled beautifully. BTW is is more like gui front end for ffmpeg. -
in-line with poisondeathray response:
following command-line will convert DTS -> AC3 5.1 ch. 448KHz DVD compatible.
1) eac3to -input.dts -output.ac3 -down6 -down16 -resampleTo48000 -448 -quality=1.00
use -down2 instead of -down6 for downmixing multi channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic II stereo.
2) one can use BeSweet to convert 6 mono WAVs to AC3.
3) With AVISynth use SSRC and SOX. -

I just purchased the LOTR: Extended Edition blu-rays and was having trouble with the DTS audio source. Specifically, I have been using ClownBD, MKVMerge, and Handbrake to create mp4 files with subtitles. Normally, I've been able to convert the DTS files into AC3 using ClownBD when demuxing, but couldn't with the LOTR blu-rays - I think this might have to do with the fact that it is a DTS 6.1 source. Any ideas on how to convert the DTS 6.1 into AC3?

Eac3to.
Of course this might be a cenevia encyption issue. But I don't know the symptoms of it so I can't say for sure.
If eac3to can't make a useable ac3 from it it may be cenevia.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
I tried Eac3to but it didnt work (using this method https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/300964-Help-Split-6-Channels-into-separate-WAVs)
Any other suggestions? -
I just finished backing up my extended LOTR discs with (almost) no problem, using Clown_BD to extract main movie, converting the audio to 640 kps AC3, as I usually do.. Something else is going on with your computer.
1) If you're going direct from disc, try ripping the disc to hard drive first, then extract main movie. After doing a couple discs, I tried to speed up the process by going direct from disc and Clown_BD bombed out halfway through. After I did the job the slower way, I went back and tried it again out of curiosity. But I haven't been able to replicate that problem.
I suspect it's more likely that will happen when the destination drive is getting full and/or fragmented. I've seen that a couple times before, although the problem is not common. But these are rather big files after all.
2) Since you've used Clown_BD before with success, it's unlikely you have a decoder problem. Nevertheless, if the above fails, try re-installing ffdshow and haali; I can confirm the versions tested by jdobbs and available on this page are stable:

OK i got it working now doing my own thing...works well enough for me at least
I just separate the DTS into separate wav files using eac3to and then make my ac3 using wav to ac3 encoder
Thanks for the suggestions! -

My experience tells me that the AC3 sound is always at a lower volume level then the DTS when converted. Some times I too have togo this route and use wavegain as an intermediate for boosting the volume.
Mostly I raise the volume using Avidemux by eelecting Copy for video and manually setting 3 - 4 db gain for Aften AC3. -
Quite by chance I hit upon a solution that is now working just fine in all respects.
I used to set the audio bit rate at 384 kbps and the volume level was never at DTS volume level. I had to resort to various other means to jack up the volume but it was always a compromise.
While just fiddling around I used MKV2AC3 software and set the audio bit rate to 640 kbps, selected Aften under method, check marked AC3 normalise option and slid the slider all the way to right under Loud.
It took a bit of time to convert but no where near my previous methods. Played both files - original and newly created and they both sounded equally loud without having to touch the volume control on the speaker system. The soft speech passages were now much louder and clearly audible.
BTW I reaped another reward as a by-product. My 4 gb dual core Atom based mini-itx system used to have problems playing files ripped at 2.5 mbps bit rate. With this conversion I am able to play even files with bit rate upwards of 5 mbps. -

I have tried this tool too. Conversion is not the problem for me. There are any number of converters available that will do the job. The problem has always been the volume levels of the AC3 track within such converted file. All else remaining the same, AC3 audio ALWAYS requires increasing the volume via the volume control knob of the speaker system, that too quite a bit. This is very pronounced for the speech - the most critical part in a movie track - which become barely audible. This is what I want to overcome.

Thanks,
In fact I did not pay attention for this, but when I will try it next time , I will see and let you know...
If there are many converters available, which one you thing is the best..
Do you have an idea how to reduce the size of DTS files.. I tried surcode DTS encoder at 1536 Mb/s and 768 kb/s Both are giving me same file size... but if i rip the same files from DTS dvd, it give me half size..... -
Is there any program that it doesn't need to install any other program and simply convert dts from any mkv and creates a new one mkv file with that converted dts->ac3 sound without loosing any syncronization.
A lot of thanks -
Video To video Converter has an option to select "copy" for the video. You can convert the audio however you like.

Hallo Friends
I have read all the questions and answers for DTS to AC3 5.1.
All you people give every one of you only a part of the solution.
I believe that there is a All-round solution for all this requests.
For example DTS7.1 in and ac3 5.1 out and so on…..
The Medicine for all your pain have the Name
XviD4PSP5
And you can download it here by Videohelp as it is complete Free
and free of Adware.
Forget the name, with the years the Maker of this have grove it up
to an powerful what ever tool..
It can do any thing of whatever I have read here.
And more more more…like a Professional Tool.
You will figure it out.
You put any kind of DTS in and you become wit the Video part
set of copy and set of what kind of Ac3 you wish for output.
Or only Audio output with several possibilities for adjustments,
for Example like a Friend here Requested
to amplifier the Audio so it comes after the conversion louder.
I hope that this will help any one of you. -
Although I have switched to Video 2 Video for most of my conversions the problem with audio portion is that it won't even maintain 5.1 channels while converting, no matter what I try.
Unfortunately there is no "copy" function for video portion in Handbrake. It does of course a fantastic job of audio conversion including adjusting the volume, switching to a different codec AND normalizing the audio - boosting the speech part - by up to 4 db. -
Hi all,I have faced the same situation and gone through lot of trouble until I found out a solution. This is how I did it. Hope it will help you too---
Download a software (free) called TEncoder video converter
If you are trying to convert mkv or mp4, use this steps-
1. Load the file in TEncoder
2. Select video "none" and audio ac3. Mind you, you might have to enter values for 'bit rate' 'channels' and 'S. Rate'. Dont leave it as 'same as source'
3. select encoder as 'Mencoder'
4. do convert of audio to ac3 5.1 and save it
5. select video details as whatever you wish to be and audio as "none"
6. select encoder as 'FFMpeg'
7. convert video and store
8. download AVI-Mux GUI
9. mux the video and audio file into one container
DONE
