  1. Hi, I'm having trouble with some of my DVDs playing.
I Convert my AVI files to Mpeg4 using WinAvi converter. The Mpeg4 files work fine.
I then encode using Tmpeg enc dvd author.
If its too big I use DVD shrink to get it right,
I burn it to Ritek printable media using Nero Burner at 2x

It usually works perfectly and i get excellent DVDs. but sometimes it messes up and when i try to play my DVD in my standalone player. The Menu usually doesnt come up at all, i just get black screen. sometimes you can play movie by mashing the remote until you hit the right button but i need the menu.

I am trying to make a DVD with 6 movies (about 30 minutes each) but i have gone through the process maybe 6 times and still havent been able to get a working copy..anyone know where i might be getting this problem from?????

Around here WinAVI doesn't have a great reputation as a quality tool, and their constant spam marketing techniques leave a lot to be desired. In many threads you will see it referred to as "The biggest piece of Monkey Crap Ever"

That said, why even go through WinAVI if you have avi files ? Mpeg4 isn't DVD compliant, and tempgenc should be able to encode your avis in most cases.

If you must use a one-click-wonder, I would recommend ConvertXtoDVD. It is only slightly slower than WinAVI, but it is much more reliable, and their support people are actually responsive.

Otherwise, look up the guides for avi to DVD conversion, and use the right tools for the job. It will take longer, but you will get much better quality, and will have control over the process.

No-one here can tell you why WinAVI is inconsistant and unpredictable, other than WinAVI support. An d judging by responses here, they probably won't answer your direct questions, they will just come and spam this thread instead.

  3. Sorry My bad, I meant mpeg2, fat fingers muahahaha

Winavi suits me, I'm no pro with DVD authoring, just a bit of a hobby really. Its fast and thats good enough for me.

But I cant get this thing sorted, I need the menus and cant find the problem. the media works fine when it works.

It's really racking my head now.

Anyone wanna relieve some of the presure in ma noggin???

    thanks anyway man.

WInAVI is one of those playthings that either works or it doesn't. If it doesn't work, you need to use something else.
