    This may have been discussed a lot here, but Vegas 6.0 refuses to load Xvid files, even after changing the FCC code from Xvid to Divx. I've read a topic around here on a workaround for this problem: https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1291964 - but I guess it's not too comfortable installing DIVX 6 and removing/installing the Xvid Codec everytime you want to load an Xvid file. I know I can upload these files with TMPGEnc Plus and MainConcept Stad Alone version in order to convert them to MPEG2, but I was just wondering if there's another workaround for this problem (other easier than that one explained on the topic mentioned right above). Thanks in advance.

    If you haven't already, try updating to the recent 6.0d release, which apparently addresses some of these problems.

    I have updated, installing the new version over the earleir 6.0c. No... it doesn't work at all. All Xvid files won't load. Any other ideas, pls? Thanks.
    PS: I have ffdshow installed here as the default codec for Xvid files - but I don't think we can blame it on this.

  4. Same here. I've never found a way to load DivX/Xvid video into Vegas.

    The few times where I've needed to load a DivX/Xvid video into Vegas, I've converted it to HuffYUV in VirtualDub first. Vegas works very well with HuffYUV.

    Version 5.0b was 100% compatible with Xvid files (since you changed the Fcc Code from Xvid to Divx first). Don't know what changes Shoyu...better yet, Sony... has done to version 6.0d - but it definitely does not work with Xvid files.

    Thanks so much for taking time to respond. That's definitely a very interesting solution; thanks really. Hope this helps other users. Anyway, if you're not editing, high quality Xvid files can be easily loaded into TMPGEnc and re-encoded to MPEG2. The outcome is excellent.
    Cheers,
    Mark

    After uninstalling the version 5.0b, about 1 month ago, my system kept a folder named Vegas Setup - Vegas 5.0 (that includes an installer and all the files that come alog with the original .exe file). I have re-installed the application but no, it doesn't work with Xvid files, either. What a mystery! Maybe installing the original .exe file instead of this installer - but no...I don't think so...

  9. Try installing a Cut down Version of Divx Codec.

    About the Xvid codec. Its a conflict nothing can be done about that.

  10. There are also players that play Xvid with out having the Codec installed. I havent had it installed in months.

    Thanks so much for replying. In fact I don't edit any Xvid video with Vegas. I use TMPGEnc for re-encoding my own Xvid files (that I use for web streaming) to MPEG2, or I render those projects directly from Vegas' timeline to TMPGEnc as MPEG2, if I want a "DVD" outcome.
    I was just trying to find a way to make Vegas load Xvid files - and the version 5.0b used to do it very well!
    Anyway, I appreciate your help. Thank you very much.
    I guess if the other users want to install the new Divx 6, they'll have to follow your workaround already discussed here:
    https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1291964

    Any other ideas, pls? Thanks in advance.

  13. Did you try without ffdshow? Also was there anything else you installed lately Codec Wise?

    I can import into Vegas version 5.0 all the way up to 6d.

    But keep in mind this is Without the Xvid Codec.

    Thanks to all who have responded.

    -At DMN??? At Sony? - No, not yet - but anyway, we broke up. lol
    Did you try without ffdshow? Also was there anything else you installed lately Codec Wise?
    -No, I didn't and yes, I have installed the new Xvid stable version. With the earlier Codec released at the end of 2004 - if I'm not mistaken - everything was OK!
    Are you also thinking that you may have corupted Install?
    -No, Sir; Vegas 6.0d is working well. I guess if I want to load and edit Xvid files with Vegas, I'll have to follow your guide. Furthermore, 3 more things can be done:
    1.Following BJ_M's suggestion, anyone can post a topic at DMN;
    2.Re-install the old Xvid version (released at the end of 2004) to find out if the problem is with the newer Xvid codec (and I am almost sure that this is the problem);
    3.Follow canadateck's guide: install Divx 6 (trial version) and if the problem continues with the older codec, uninstall it.

    Thanks to all.

    yes -- keep in mind that vegas dosnt use the xvid codec - it uses the divx or its own built in reader

    but if a divx codec is not installed -- perhaps it does use the xvid one -- it s hard to tell really

    Thank you.
    You know guys, was just thinking. Canadateck's guide work, at least if you want to load Xvid files to re-encode them to MPEG2 with Vegas. BUT... Let's suppose you want to load these Xvid files, to edit and re-encode them to Xvid once again - then I guess this is going to be impossible since you have uninstalled the Xvid codec.

    A Brazilian user came up with this idea at orkut: he told me to uninstall all codecs I have and then to install this codec pack. After this, he said Vegas will open anything. "I DO want to make clear that I haven't install it because I don't want to uninstall my codecs". So if you want to try it, do it at your own risk.

    since vegas uses internal decoders for the most part - plus certain standards ... that codec pack will do crap-o-la

    otherwise - as far as codec packs go ... this one is prob. ok maybe ... hard to say as they dont list whats in it
