I have spent the last couple of months reading and reading on this forum and I feel I need to say thanks to those who write in questions and those who take the time to share their expertise.

I know you ask folks to reply what has worked for them so here goes. I have a Memorex true 8xl (which I believe from my reading is a LiteOn SOHW 812S). Had I found this site before my purchase I may have made another choice, but with help from this forum I am accomplishing everything I want to do with it. (Mainly Memories To TV and backing up children's DVDs for car trips).

Anyway, it has taken me several months, many coasters and much reading to finally figure out that if I burn my DVDs to only +R and +RW discs I have no problem with skips, freezes, or hanging in any of our DVD players. I have made 5 "good ones" in a row and although I am still holding my breath I am hoping I have found the right solution for me. I had tried Sony, Maxell, Memorex and Imation DVDs at different speeds - but mostly all were -R and -RW because of posts that led me to believe they may have a higher compatability.

I was afraid to order large quantities of the "good" blank DVDs online because I felt sure I just hadn't figured out what was right for this burner. It did everything else I asked of it with no problem and I never got the first error message. My successful burns have been on Memorex +RW and Verbatim +R (both purchased at Wal-Mart).

Thanks again for all your help.

    tryintoo,

Welcome to Videohelp. And I applaud you "doing it the right way" researching the guides and topics first ....and not just coming in cold with a "OK. Now how do I start video stuff?" thread.

All newbies should read the part of the AUP that suggests reading up, doing forum searches, and lurking before posting that first time. Very few actually follow that advice. Thank you.

    Thanks for the well wishes,

The method I am using for backups is ripping with DVD Decrypter vs 3.5.1.0 and then using DVD Shrink vs 3.2 to encode and burn image as ISO and Decrypter to burn. As long as I use +R's or +RW's for DVDs things are fine.

All the reading from folks here about who makes what drive paid off. Because I had read somewhere on this site that Lite-On drives seem to prefer +R media, although I have put data on both DVD-R's and CD-R's without any problems, I figured I didn't have anything to lose to try using +Rs. It really made a huge difference in my outcome.

I am using the Nero software that came with it for all other functions and do not have any issues with it.

    Again, appreciate all the info.

    Hello,

Tryintoo - you could also use dvdshrink and backup to the harddrive. Then use the burning software that came with your drive and burn the video_ts folder (or if you have nero dvdshrink will load that for you). That may save you a step. Glad you found what you needed.
