  1. Will the DVD-R vs DVD+R war ever have a winner?
Both media are widely available, and there are many dual-format burners available. Would one ever expect to see one of these formats fade away?
Or will both formats cling on until higher capacity formats displace them?

BTW, how long did the VHS/Betamax war take to complete?

    (I certainly hope I didn't start a +r/-r flame war. I'm just curious.)

Why does there need to be a winner?

    The formats co-exist.

    Hello,

Nope, this war will never end until hd or bluray catches on. Then we get a whole new format war!

P.S. I think the vhs/betamax took at least 8-10 years. Not sure though.

I doubt the war will end. Unlike the old beta V/S VHS war, both of these formats can be recorded and played on the same hardware. The world is big enough for two recordable disks. Blue ray makes all existing equipment obsolete. It Will not succeed. It will go the way of the Elcassette and Laserdisk formats. Consumers will ignore Blueray by the millions. And let's not forget the brilliant DIVX-DVD,which consumers ignored into oblivion.

This "hot" war has already turned into a "cold" war.
There's really no need for consumers to even consider it a war at all anymore, regardless of what the BB clowns will tell you.

Those of us using dual burners are starting to reap the benefits. (lower $)

  8. Well, the -r side are bastards for purposely not supporting +r bitset discs on older players that can play them. Maybe the bad karma will doom them in the end.

I'm just bitter my Benq doesn't write -r media very well... not really, but it kind of sucks.

All you haters better recognize, 3.5" Floppy is the best.

Why do people start threads like this? Both formats are fine depending on the players you own. For me, DVD-R or DVD+R, it doesn't matter. As long as the disc I burn will work and not freeze, I'm content.

Would DVD-R be more expensive now if DVD+R had not come out?

    An open question.

Made no difference. The battles between companies made the difference. DVD is following CD-R (and there was no CD+R there).

So unlike lordsmurf, you think this "war" has affected media prices?

Personally, I agree with lordsmurf. Usually, if a product is released later AND cheaper, it will start a price war. For example AMD's processers started a pricing\innovation war that to this day is great for consumers. If it were up to Intel, we would still be using overpriced PIIs.

DVD+R was released later but was still more expensive than DVD-R. Therefore, DVD-R prices didn't really need to drop to be competitive. They are still a little cheaper than +R especially in bulk online. It looks like the DVD forum fees are not significant for manufacturers.

  16. They're significant enough for the Chinese at least, who are always looking for a way to circumvent them by coming up with new formats. They add up.

If the crude oil is $50 per barrel... we may see a price increase ! All the raw materials are from crude oil.

  20. i still think the format that is better supported by DVD recorders will win out the war. Quite frankly, DVD media is not yet main stream b/c it is still too hard to save tv show, home video to DVD using a PC for most people. Most people are still happy with VCR especialy that it is less complicated. WHEN DVD recorders become cheaper like near $200 range, then i think DVD media will really be mainstream and almost every single store that cares VHS will carry DVD disks. So more and more people will use DVDs and the recorder format wins.

What I said was in response to 888888's comment about DVD Forum fees.
