Flamed? I hope not. I would just point out that in order to view avi files on your stand alone DVD player they will need to be converted to mpeg1 format and burned to a CDR in VCD format. There are many great guides on this site to do the conversion and Nero is simply the best CD authoring program available and what's more, it burns VCD to CDR. Closely examine the How To section of this site. I use DVD2AVI and TMPGENC to do the conversion. Very easy and the guides are quite detailed.

okay i am currently converting my AVI to MPEG2 and it says it is going to take 3 hours. is that correct???

Depending on the encoder that you are using, the size of the file that you are encoding, and the settings of the encoder, that sounds about right.
By the way i have used TMPGEnc for over a year now and it works great (it's cheap too).
Good Luck -
Convert to VCD standard mpeg1, not mpeg2. Also- make sure you convert to NTSC or PAL depending on your current place of residence.

I have that player, well it says "DVP-NS400D" No "F" ?
and it plays VCD's 100%
CD-R = Maxel or TDK
Burner = Teac
Vdub, AVI edit
TMPGEnc, AVI to VCD (Template)
Roxio, Video pack 5
1, load AVi into "vdub-mp3-freeze.exe" (hacked Vdub)
This makes a log of bad frames.
2, Use log and delete bad frames if any found.(Streaming)
3,split 700Mb+ AVI into half (Streaming)
4,convert to VCD.Mpeg with TMPGEnc
5, Burn disks (Roxio Video pack 5), better than Easy VCD creator.
3 above can be skipped if you use source range in TMPGEnc
