Ripping, encoding...ect... is time consuming. I hear the reason this is done is because dvd r/rw does not have enough space to make a 1:1 copy. So my question is this: Why not use DVD Ram's to make those one to one copies?
This would make everything simplier and the process more quick, while maintaining dvd quality and dvd features.

DVD-RAM can be read, unfortunately, by very very few stand-alone DVD players. IMHO, it is not a solution.

ya, same as above. but if u were to install a graphics card that supported tv out or were to buy a vga capture device or some sort, you could play your dvd ram's thro your computer onto the tv.
never tried it before wih dvd ram, but it's almost the same as dvd rom

Having both a DVD Ram and a DVD-R you can make 1:1 back up IF the dvd in question is under 4.7gb, I have done it before by simply running DVDecyrpter and then buring the vob files with nero as udf / iso, as for the DVD Ram, I have a first generation unit, which is limited to 2.6gb per side 5.2gb max per catrdige and only plays back on DVD Ram drives, also write times are slower than DVD-RW. The newer units ( spec version 2) have roughly double that capacity at 9.4 gb total both sides combined. DVD-R/RW has 4.7GB per side and there all allready doubleside dvd-r discs. Write time on a DVD-R are at 2x and this translates in to about 30 min for a full dvd-r burn, dvd/rw burn times are one hour, and one hour for full erase ( not quick ).
The DVD-R/RW ( The Pioneer A03 ) is IDE based, my 1st gen DVD-Ram is Ultra SCSI. Also the A03 will not initiate with high speed cd/rw media ( rated 4x-10 or higher ) but prefers 4x rated cd/rw media. DVD-R and DVD-RW discs play back in home units and computer units with DVD Rom drives.
