Hello,
If you want it fast go with the 12x. If you want high capacity go with the dual layer burner. Just be on notice the dual layer home made discs aren't very reliable yet (compatibility issues).

I'd opt for DL. I just think it's a better value. Speeds will increase over time but even if you don't take into account different write strategies, the time difference between 8x and 12x is only 2.5 mins. In actuality there might be a bit more or a bit less depending on lead-in, lead-out, CAV, CLV, Z-CLV etc. DL will be more of a boon than a slight speed increase.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
i think you should rephrase that to "be on notice the dual layer dvd+Rs and the writers, arent very reliable yet,and are still low speed.".Originally Posted by yoda313

Hello,
Thanks for the correction. I just wanted to get across the idea that dual layer burners and media aren't 100% reliable/compatible yet.RottenFoxBreath-i think you should rephrase that to "be on notice the dual layer dvd+Rs and the writers, arent very reliable yet,and are still low speed.".

How fast is his computer?
How about the new pioneer 108? Should be out soon, 16xdvd (top speed for dvd writing) 4x DL. -
If you could even call those Pioneer clunkers 16x... at "16x" they write slower than most 12x burners. Heck, at 16x, it's only a little over 90 seconds faster than my 8x drive. The A08 is mostly marketing fluff.
I'd get a 8x +R DL drive. These drives are true and tested and are mature. You don't need the 12x speed. The one nice thing about the 1213S is that it will most likely be (unofficially) upgradeable to 16x with possibly 4x +R DL. -
code-----will you have any firmware anytime soon for the 1213S??
thanks for all that you have done!!!!!

What's the time difference between 12x and 8x? Not much I would estimate. Maybe 30 seconds.
Go with the double layer. -
1hr / 8x = 7.5min (not including lead-in, lead-out)
1hr / 12x = 5min (not including lead-in, lead-out)
...not really worth it.Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
Not true because for faster than ~6x speed DVD writers need to use ZCLV or (P)CAV instead of CLV. The time for writing a disc @8x can vary from about 8 minutes (for example Plextor PX-712A using PCAV) to over 10 minutes (for example BTC using ZCLV with late shifts). 12x is about 6.5-7.5 minutes depending on burner.Originally Posted by ViRaL1

go for the dual layer.....
8X or 12 X...just a matter of couple minutes for a dvd.
but i would like to have the DL, even though right now is expensive.
Pioneer 16 X ??? that is garbage, no media right now for it, and personally......i would not burn a dvd at maximum speed. -
So, there wasnt any 4x media when 4x writers came out, same at 8x, 12x, etc... 16x top speed & the OP wanted the top & that's the top writing speed. You can probably write at that speed on 8x media.

that is right...anyway, i would not give away a DL for a couple of minutes extraOriginally Posted by handyguy

Have you seen the tests for it? The darn thing actually burns at 16x slower than it burns at 12x.Originally Posted by lenti_75
