Problem importing Mpeg's and .VOB files into Premiere Pro

Okay, I'm rather new with the whole video editing thing so please excuse any stupid questions. I've got Premiere Pro and a pretty slick Dell XPS system, so I'm assuming these problems aren't with the system. Okay, I'm trying to do two things here...One, import a mpeg into Premiere...Two, import a .VOB file straight from a DVD into Premiere Pro.
Anybody who can help me do this stinking rocks.
Whenever I try and import either an .mpeg or a .VOB I get a file import error 'No importer found that supports this file type.' (do I need to download a decoder of some sort for Premiere???)
I also have Nero on the computer and I was able to import a .VOB file into it and export as a .AVI, but the audio was pretty bad...good video but bad audio. Now I am even having problems doing that.
Anyway, I guess what I really need is someway to get .mpeg's and .VOB's into an .AVI format so I can mess with them in Premiere. Thanks alot for any help.

AFAIK, Premiere does not support import of mpeg-2. I believe there is a plug-in you can buy that will allow this, sorry I can't remember the name right now, try a forum search.

VOB is mpeg-2 video plus audio tracks multiplexed slightly differently than normal mpeg-2. I don't know if the preiere plug-in will allow vobs but it is quite easy to extract the mpeg from a vob. Again a forum search will probably be quite fruitful.

I saw that 'MainConcept MPEG Pro' helps you edit mpeg's inside Premiere. Is that the way you are able to import .mpeg's into Premiere Pro also? I'm not able to import them into Premiere right now. Thanks.
