    Are you telling us you got horiz tearing with the TBC
    and not with direct connect ? You would think it would fix such
    things since that IS timing .
    I think I know what's going on - now , how to fix it

    Exactly. I was surprised too, but that's what happened. The only thing I can figure is that the tape was so badly damaged the video was affected as well as the timing. With direct connect the screwed up timing somehow cancelled the screwed up video and it looked OK. I have no idea if that's even possible, but just a guess.
