Noticed the recently upgraded eMacs have an 8x Superdrive option.

    Per Apple's site info:

An industry-standard drive, the SuperDrive reads many standard CD and DVD formats and writes (or burns) CDs and DVDs lightning fast, writing CD-R discs at up to 24x speed, CD-RW discs at up to 10x speed and DVD-R discs at up to 8x speed.
Alas, no mention of DVD+R capability

But, since I am waiting on rumored updates to the G5s (and enough money) - to replace my trusty Dual-450 G4 - it means the G5s should have at least 8X, and hopefully dual-layer drives.

in reference to the tower why wait?
you can get a 8x drive for about 150 and im sure you can easily sell you pulled dual format 4x on ebay or somewhere for a decent price.

the last thing i would let limit my purchase would be burn speed!

the e-mac on the other hand, thats another story

    1. Still saving-up the cash (don't want to go into debt for a new machine, even if it is the American way!) And, since I also want to get a LCD-display to replace my 15" CRT - it is going to be a serious chunk-o-change. :P

    2. Don't want to have one of those "D'oh!" moments - when a new machine comes out right after I buy an existing model. If I remember correctly, you went through that yourself - buying a dual-1.25 G4 right before the G5s came out. (Sorry if that opens an old wound).

If I had the cash, I would jump on an existing G5 - since any of them would be an amazing improvement over my dual-450 G4.

So, I'm enjoying all the rumors - and waiting to see what actually appears.

    OHHH THE PAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
actually............ i later found the dual g4 1.25 is faster in some ways than the 1.6 [which is the one I would have gotten]. so im actually very very pleased still!

in fact, no matter how you look at it this will always happen! Soon as they release a new model set i believe they already are working on the next one!

But i have heard that new g5's are due on the scene so if your going to get one definatly wait until those hit the scene

    ohhh and i found a DVR-107 for 103$
