Trying to convert my collection of LaserDisks to DVD, I could not achive long term video audio sync with software capture cards. Now I'm trying an ADVC100. I use WinDV to copy the output from the ADVC100 to hard drive. Then I use TMPGEnc Plus and TMPGE DVD Author. The burned DVD disk is perfectly in sync (audio/video). The problem is that the audio volume is way down!
Mikemelancholic in his guide: 'LaserDisk to DVD' mentioned that the one fault he found with the ADVC100 was, "the volume level of the captured .AVI,s seems to be a little on the low side". He recommended 'Cool Edit 2000'. I choked when I discovered the $300 cost of this software.
My volume was much more than a little low. Does anyone know anything about this? Anyone know of any low cost audio software that could rase the level? Thanks.

Load the captured video into Gold Wave (shareware, but a steal at $50.00 USD). Select-->Effects-->Volume-->Change. Adjust the volume until it is at a level that suits you, then save it as a wave file. Now go to your TMPGEnc Plus! step, but use the new wave file as audio. Now your video should have good volume.
Hello. -
Any decent audio editing program should have some sort of volume control or normalize function.
I do this with all my capture ... normalize to 0.0db
The ADVC-100 captures 16-bit Stereo 48k PCM WAV audio. So load this up in your audio editing program and do the normalize thing or volume whatever that program calls it and then save to a new 16-bit Stereo Stereo 48k PCM WAV audio file.
As for the final DVD you should get the AC-3 plug-in for TMPGEnc DVD Author to convert your PCM WAV file to AC-3 audio format.

@ amk,
I'm surprised that you are having audio "low level" sound problems with your
advc-100 device. I can't seem to find any issues w/ my advc and my tiny LD
collection (tough testing at this time) and I'm wondering what are your final
settings in TMPG (your encoding) are you using in your final projects to DVD ??
FWIW, at the present time, I'm using at a minimum, 192k for my audio. And]
yes, since I'm making DVD projects, my audio is set to 48k (not 44.1k)
Could it be your LD and your connections (ie, weak or poor quality cables)
that might be causing poor audio output ??
Maybe try another DVD author app, like ifoEDIT. I use this one, but I haven't
played with it for a while now. But, I will be today, and messing w/ the audio
outputs for DVDs.

I'm going to try Baldrick's ffmpegGUI - - its a WAV to AC3 tool that
he GUI 'ed for all here. That one that I'm testing now, works under my
Windows 98 setup. ffmpeg GUI Beta Build 2. Its not very fast, but
its worth some playing around with.

hmm.. just thought of somethingWonder if Baldrick can add in
a "normalize", as a feature to this tiny GUIAnyways.. just a thought.

Thanks for your replies concerning my audio volume level problem. At the time that I posted, I was at the point of making test DVDs, using only PC speakers. I substituted another set of speakers and every thing was fine. Then I did what I should have done much sooner: Played the DVD via DVD player/TV/Amplfier/etc. All is OK.
I decided to keep the CanopusADVC-100.
Thanks again. -
i thought the level from my canopus was very low, so i loaded up my wav in goldwave. after scanning and trying to normalise to 100% it turns out the peak point was 100% for one punch in the whole film, so the film itself was just quiet/mixed weird.
