Is it possible to record a DVD-R on a stand alone DVD recorder and then put the disc into your computer and using Windows Movie Maker or some authoring program to make custome menus and chapter stops and such and such? Or does it have to be a DVD recorded from a DVD writer?

Yes, you can record on a standalone/desktop recorder and then reauthor the dvd with for example tmpgenc dvd author, ulead dvd workshop, ulead dvd moviefactory, dvd-lab.

So as long as its a non-copyrighted DVD then you can put it into the computer and do whatever you want with it?

whether it's copyrighted or not is only a moral issue of whether you feel guilty about it. if it's not copy protected then you can do exactly what you're asking. i record my home movies on my standalone, rip to hd with dvd decrypter, and add menus with tmpgenc dvd author. this method works great for me. plus reauthoring the video will fix compatibility issues. many dvd players won't read discs recorded on standalone recorders and reauthoring makes them compatible.
