  1. Just got myself a DVD writer. I got the Memorex DualFormat 4x writer. It was on sale for $90ish bucks after rebate. Anyhow....I've got some movies I'd like to backup in case they get scratched.

The 1st one I'd converted to divx a while back so it's currently an AVI with the following characteristics:

    720 x 272
    29.970 fps
    02:34:20.493 Hours
    277537 frames
    DIV3
    MP3 (96kbps)

I currently have TMPGEnc DVD Source Creator and tried using that to convert it but I must have picked the wrong size as it came out all squished together (too tall and narrow). I don't see any options for the 720x272 that it's currently at. Please tell this newbie how to get this thing converted and burned so that I can watch it on my home DVD player...at least until I find the original disc, which is convenienty misplaced!

I've also got a few DVDs which I've copied to my hard drive. Again, I don't have the originals handy since it's my entire CD/DVD case that's gone missing. To give you an example of this scenario, I've copied my Terminator 3 DVD to my hard drive. Inside the "Video_TS" folder I have 6 IFO files and 2 VOB files. This is obviously a different scenario from the above divx avi scenario so I think if I'm able to successfully burn both of these babies I'll have sufficient knowledge to back up my other discs.

Thanks in advance to anyone who feels benevolent enough to help this helpless newbie out!!!

Sorry. Needed to get that out.

It's time to point you in the right direction - you will need to read the "What is DVDR" section at top left. Make sure you read the part to do with valid DVD resolutions - you will find that 720 x 272 is not valid. Therefore you must convert this to a valid DVD resolution. The next problem will be your aspect ratio. Search for guides to do with TMPGEnc settings or try these here. You need to create a MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 file and then author it to make it into IFO, BUP and VOB files.

Your VIDEO_TS directory should have more files than that - as a minimum you should have 2 IFO, 2 BUP and I would say at least 4 VOB files if you have ripped the entire movie correctly. If you need step by step instructions, search the guides for conversion from AVI to DVD.
    If in doubt, Google it.
