Hi
Not exactly sure where i should be posting this, but i thought this might be the right area.
More a matter of interest then a question.
I'm in Sydney Australia, and i was walking around Pitt St. When i came across this shop. Now this shop was selling a unit like a vcr which boasted that it could record TV onto blank CD's and play them in your computer or standalone DVD/VCD player.
Can't remember the exact name of the unit, but for those in Sydney and interested, it was in the old Brash's shop on Pitt St.
Thought it was quite interesting that they've finally made units that can record straight off TV to CD.
Cheers
Furble
Now i've never seen these on the market before and i don't know how much it cost or what the quality of the recording was or any details

A fellow Sydney-sider!
It is probably the Terapin unit. That's the only hardware VCD recorder I've seen in Sydney.
If you search on it in the forums, you'll find some info -- several people have actually bought one and have some comments.
There was also a fairly extensive review of the unit in Electronic Australia magazine early this year (or late last year) if you want some more local info.
Locally, I think they cost about $1000 -- a store in Randwick was selling it for about $900 (I think).

I live in US, but i'd love to know if they would be available for import...I'm not sure the Astralia/American Ratio of currency...but 1000 American Dollars seems like alot for a VCD Recorder. Any Opinions would be great, thanks!
If I knew everything, I wouldn't be here.... -
I meant $1000 Australian dollars which approx. = $US500.
I'm pretty sure that the Terapin unit isn't made in Australia.

Amoisonic has 2 beautiful machines for video grabbing in realtime to vcd or svcd format (not exactly svcd, more like cvd...)
anyway...
Amoisonic VDR2000 Video Disc Recorder
Realtime recording to VCD (74 min) or SVCD format (35min) in one compact disk...
Very good quality. Just plug and record from any analogue/digital source... Not so expensive...
Amoisonic DVR2001 Digital Video Recorder
The same but it records to a hard disk (then you rip to a computer, etc...). 38 hours of audio/video on hard disk.
A bit cheaper than VDR 2000

Correct vitualis the terapin unit is probably made in Singapore or somewhere in Asia. On the terapin website (for those interested in downloading a good detailed manual etc. http://www.goterapin.com ) it states that the company that sells the terapin unit has its main base in Dallas, but is 100% owned by Serial System Ltd in Singapore.
For those interested in various reviews etc. about this unit
can find 4 independent reviews here http://www.ecoustics.com/Home/Home_Audio/CD_Recorders/CD_Recorder_Reviews/
@Furble
maybe if it wasn't the Terapin you saw it could have been the Amoisonic/VDR 2000 http://www.recordsvcd.com/vcdrecorder.shtml
the MALATA VDR-R1
http://www.avdeals.com/vdrr1.htm
or the DVA-2100 VDR
http://www.oxygenergy.com/home.htm
these VDR's seem to come in all shapes sizes and prices!
