Last week I posted asking if anyone knew anything about svcd creation and got no response, so I did a bt of searching and I was able to find an encoder http://www.heroinewarrior.com/mpeg2movie.php3, I think it would be great if there was help for linux users as well as windows and mac

You might want to try Wine (Wine Is Not and Emulator) to use windows programs under Linux. TMPGEn, VirtualDub, Flask, Media studio, and Vegas Video all work under Wine. Homepage - http://www.winehq.com/

Would be appreciated m8. Btw - could you do some kind of comparison chart for times of encoding on Linux/WinXP/2000 -thnx. -
one linux guide? no I want at least 4...author,capture,convert,dvdrip and edit....but you could start making one that covers everything maybe...

I dont have a capture card... I have never even done a capture before. But I could just find out how to do it from somewhere else and then rewrite my own version.
To get the ball rolling, can somebody please name me some apps that I could look into, in particular a decent MPEG encoder that will do VCD etc and also some rippers.
I dont really think that it will be fair to do a comparison of encoding times on different OS's as there is no cross platform encoder that I know of: The differences in time taken for different encoders on the same OS are so varied. Also, I see no point in using WINE, better just to use Windows if your gonna do it WINE style (it would also end up being a "How to Use WINE" guide). I would rather do a 100% Linux guide, not using any windows apps - Windows emulation just defeats the purpose of using Linux in the first place.
I will do an all in one guide if you want... one that covers everything, but I will need some input from people.
Could anybody that can help either post here or send me a private message? I would appreciate some links if anybody knows of any.
PS.
I wont be able to do this overnight, it will take me time to get it all sorted. But I will start some research now.

It's great to finally see some intrest in this topic.
themichael: I haven't had any experence with WINE but I do that that when you emulate some thing, it really slows down the processor for example a nintendo emulator needs a 486 to run decently which is roughly 10x the nintendo's operating speed, im not saying there will be that big of a gap when you emulate Windowns on Linux, but it would be much better to have a program that is programmed in Linux
d4n13l : The link to the encoder I provided (http://www.heroinewarrior.com/mpeg2movie.php3) is an encoder that can do "MPEG-2 Video, MPEG-1 Video, mp3, and mp2 audio." And I think it can also rip DVD's but it's not too clear on the site "An ordinary DVD can be compressed and split into two CD-R's with very high quality, but we won't see many DVD's ripped with Mpeg-2 MOVIE will we."
From all the info on its site it sounds to be a very good encoder, it might be a god idea to check it out.

gravity:
Its my understanding that Wine doesn't emulate windows but acts as a translator for windows API. -
This is why I question WinXP compatability mode: if I were to run a win98 application under XP, is XP emulating win98? If it is, the running of the program will be slower. This might not matter for simple office applications but for cpu intensive software (encoders)and games, it will be a problem.

WINE is not an emulater, but then WINE is an emulater. GNUs NOT UNIX... swings and roundabouts all the same.
I see no point in a guide for Linux that basically uses WINE. We have enough guides for Windoze apps already, therefore, it would just be a "How to Use WINE" guide. Not a guide FOR Linux. You would have to go though more trouble to set up WINE etc... then you STILL follow the Windoze guides. It defeats the purpose and takes more time. I am not sure about the performance issues, they would be about the same I would guess. I have heard that WINE can even execute Windows binaries faster than Windoze in some cases.
Gravity,
I have always been interested, in fact i was thinking of making this topic my very self. I just thought that 99.9% of people didnt even know what Linux was. I am glad that I underestimated this.
I dont think that the encoder does avi -> mpeg. I downloaded it but havent booted into Linux to use it yet, so I will get back to you on what it really does. It would also be nice if there were a variety of encoders to choose from.
PS
If anybody finds a links for encoders/rippers etc. for FreeBSD, post them!
