  1. A while back, I applied a firmware patch for my laptop's DVD player. It installed properly, and I used discinfo and cdvdinfo to verify everything was in order (which it seemed to be). However, I just ran out of region changes and now my dvd player application (ASUSDVD which comes with the ASUS laptop) is complaining my DVD is locked to a certain region. I'm just wondering if anyone knows why and if they have a solution. Here are some screenshots (the first two are cdvdinfo and discinfo outputs, the third is the region locked message when I try to play a DVD other than the region it's now locked in).

Thanks for anyone that can provide some help on this.

What does the windows hardware device manager tell you about the region and the number of changes left?

  3. You not only need to fix the firmware of your DVD drive, but you also have to worry about the Region in your Operating system.

  4. Ok, I blanked out the value in the key as suggested. I disabled and re-enabled my dvd player in the in hardware manager. I checked out the properties in the region settings tab (under Advanced Settings) and it says my Current Region is region 1. It also says I'm allowed to change region settings one more time. However, when I try to play a Region 1 DVD, it still complains my DVD is locked to Region 2. This is making no sense. I'm going to reboot and see what happens. If it still doesn't work, I'll try deleting the key entirely and rebooting again.

  5. why not use a small app like dvd region killer, and then you will not have to worry about proper firmware changes (although flashing the drive itself is nice) or drive changes ever again

  6. Ok, I deleted the key entirely, rebooted and still nothing. What I don't understand is that my DVD software is saying the DVD is locked to region 2 (picture above in my first post) but the Device Manager is telling me the drive is Currently in Region 1 (with 1 change remaining):

What's up with that? Could it be my DVD player application?
By the way, I'm running Windows 2000 Server not that that really matters.

I'll check out region killer I guess. I'd just like to understand what's going on.

  7. Ok, I figured it out. It was ASUSDVD that was stuck on Region 2 (aka PowerDVD). I got DVD Genie to take care of that. All works fine now. Thank you everyone for your help.
