I have played with this for about 4 months on several projects and still do not have an answer. I create a slideshow with Premiere using jpg pictures (scanned at about 600x800), add music and a descriptory slide here and there, do a real time preview and it looks perfect. I then export the timeline to a movie (and I've tried different compressions) and ALWAYS, yes always, I get a few pictures in the final mpg movie that are BLACK! I have moved them to different positions, moved them to the other "video" line, but no matter what they come out black. I had this on my old HP Scanjet4, a later HP 5200c, and now on an Epson 1670 Perfection. The pictures are 24 bit, about 300-400K, and are touched up with either ACDSee or Photoshop 6.0, depending on how much work they need. Has anyone seen this? This is really killing me in time. I thinking it must be something with the touch up ... but I don't know how to detect what's wrong. Anyway .... any ideas appreciated.

Change their ratio. See if the ratio of the picture is the same as the ratio of the video file. I cant remember exactly how to change it or what to change. You can try:

right click on the image in the timeline
    select video options
    select 'Maintain Aspect Ratio'

I made some slideshows in the past and had the same problem, and all I remember is that it was something to do with the aspect ratio.

    Good luck!

    Thanks djmattyb,
The aspect ratio was already locked so I'm thinking it might remotely be in the scan dimensions at the time I scan or possibly in the way I edit and save (or touch up) each pic. I scan my pics at the approx dpi that it will take to fill a tv screen and then edit with ACDSee or Photoshop 6.0 My hunch is that it's something in the way Photoshop saves after some of the edits when I do a touchup. In anycase I just updated to Premeire to 7.0 and the problem went away Also it appears (I'm still testing) that 7.0 will encode directly to m2v so I can forget about all the hassle with "frameserving" which I couldn't get to work anyway.

    Take care

Had the same problem when choosing 'maintain aspect ratio' for some jpegs. If the jpeg had to shrink horizontally, it would work ok. If the jpeg had to shrink vertically, it would show only the background color.

    I think it's a bug in 6.0

I don't know if this is involved as well but I was told to clean JPGS
of extra info to import them into Premiere

That is..Open the suspect JPG in a new program..copy the picture contents
only to a new file and save with a new name

Sometimes I'm told the COMMENTS and DATABASE hooks in the jpg files
    screw up their import..
Of course images scanned with PHOTSHOP (companion prorgram) should always be fine..BUT WHAT THE HEY

    dcsos,
That sounds logical and I think it would work ... that is to recopy the picture with a different name. Something certainly was amiss in the way it was saved. I can remember some time back having a batch of scans that were about 10% bad. However, the pictures I have now rendered ok with Premeire 7.0 so they must have made some changes in the program too. Thanks guys for the comebacks.
