I thought I had found it for £199 including VAT

But then, at the last stage of the checkout, they added an extra £30 tax.

    Question:

Will the ADVC-50 produce the same results as the 100 model?

Since I only want to capture video, this may be the option for me..?

Will the fact that its internal make any difference?

What did they add the £30 tax for if VAT was already included?

Bought mine from www.smartdv.co.uk over a year ago for about £280, but you can find the UK dealer list here.

The ADVC-50 is the same as the ADVC-100 without the output function. Though I haven't tried to output with mine, the fact that the ADVC-100 is external and portable has saved me lots of time - just get a 10m firewire lead and you can keep the ADVC-100 next to your TV/Cable/VCR instead of moving the whole PC.

    Well worth it.
    Regards,

    Rob

    Be careful.
I'm led to believe they're not the same.
The ADVC-50 doesn't have the facility to remove macrovision.
I'm lucky to have a pal in Sebastopol, Calif, who had it shipped to him from NY (for free) and then $14.50 over to me in England.
    Cost me $264.00 all in.
Sorry, but it was worth it for the macrovision post

After much research, these are the best prices I found in the UK:

Canpus ADVC-100 £241.33 (includes a free set of cables)
    or £240.82

    DataVideo DAC-100 £197.99

    Canapus ADVC-50 - £175.07

All prices include taxes and postage costs.

I am not considering the Pyro A/V or the Pinnacle Dazzle ranges since I have heard about A/V Sync problems.

Now I have to think about which one to buy, my ideal choice would be the ADVC-100 but it costs a lot.

So the obvious choice, would be the ADVC-50 which is scaled down and does not included the outputs that I do not need any way, but will the internal components of the computer interfere with the device (as I read in another message board)?

I have read macrovision can be disabled on an AVDC also.

However, again, the inteference worries me.

What do you reckon? Does anyone used the AVDC-50?

    Has anyone done a comparison.

As for the DAC-100, the colours don't seem as sharp/vibrant in caps I have looked at.

    Yes, I have.
    On the ADVC-100.
I've read the opposite on the 50.

Yes, there are many people here use the ADVC-50.
You don't need to fit it into a PCI slot, you can mount it in a drive bay.
The only reason you can fit it into a PCI slot it to draw power, otherwise you need a power cable (for the drive slot).
I have no idea what you mean when you say you worry about interference.
In all my research I never came across it.
I can't help you with that.
The Canopus website has a very detailed product page for this hardware, it's very good.

Here is a quote from the Pure Motion forums

    Hello Harry.

I too have been very interested in the ADVC-50. The main differences between the -50 and -100 beeing the -50 beeing internal, having no output (to VHS for example) and no ability to disable Macrovision (Macrovision a sort of copyprotection on most bought VHS tapes).

I didn´t need any of the above so i went and ordered the -50 yesterday. However a last check at the forums at Canopus site made me change my mind. There are a few reports of people having trouble with interference from inside the computer, thus affecting the quality of the picture. I tell you i´ve spent a lot of time on various forums and very rarely seen this fenomena, so maybe it´s a matter of luck with a particular computer. Anyway i thought you should now. I changed my mind and ordered the ADVC-100 because of this. (I´ve also read about interference from TV/monitor/comp for the ADVC-100, but i guess that can be solved by moving the unit "around".

Ok now you now. I´ve included a couple of links where this is mentioned.

Ok Harry. I hope this doesn´t "screw" things up for you. You probably can go ahead with the ADVC-50, but...

Oh, if you haven´t been on http://www.dvdrhelp.com you can find ALOT of information, even users reviews on various capture cards, including the -100 & -50.

Good luck with your buy, whatever you go with!!!!!

And I meant I have read you can disable macrovision on the ADVC 50 unit (forgot to type the 50) by removing a pin or something..

There's a guy I've liased with on the ADVC-100 Canopus forum, called canopus_BH or something.
He's a moderator but don't let that put you off, he's bloody good and very polite, you wouldn't think him a moderator at all
I suggest you register over there too and post your fears.
You'll no doubt see my post too "man, the reds are RED"
    Good luck in your choice.
    Will

EDIT: I'd suggest you create another thread in the 'capture' forum.
This thread has nothing to do with interference and could get burried, you might not get the answers you would normaly get.
Post about a problem with the ADVC-50 and the ADVC-50 user replies will come flooding in!

OK...I'm a little confused here. Some are saying you CANNOT disable macrovision on the ADVC-50 and some are saying you CAN...so which is it???????? I need to know this before I decide to buy because the vhs tapes I own and want to copy are protected with macrovision....can someone clear this up for me???......PLEASE???

  12. The game7 - Now they've gone and made it even more complicated at Canopus by introducing the ADVC55 - same chipset as the 50, but external, and (if the UK Canopus site is correct) cheaper than the 50!

I've had the ADVC50 connected as a bay install for about 9 months - no interference problems at all - great capture.

There is a problem with XP SP1, but if you go to the Canopus forum you'll soon find out about that - there must be 200 posts on it!

I've found it no big deal to get round by a quick power down, if necessary.

Macrovision - I believe you can defeat it by removing link 6 while capturing a Macrovision signal - but I've never tried.

As Will said - all the info is on the Canopus forums.

The ADVC50 -IMHO a great device!

    regards

    roger
