too many ripping/copying guides?

Just an observation...

There are WAY TOO MANY copying guides and ripping guides right now. I see like 10+ guides for DVD Shrink alone. Just look at the front page of this site right now, it seems every guides is all about copying a DVD.

What happening to capturing/encoding/authoring?

Great DVD programs like Encore, ReelDVD and DVD-lab have so few guides for them. Same for encoders like ProCoder and Mainconcept.

What's the world coming too!

Is everybody throwing in the towel and "backing up" or using a DVD recorder?

I must agree with Lordsmurf. Everything has become more and more about backup ( just a poor excuse to copy movies ) DVD's.

Would also like to see more guides using Procoder or Mainconcept for use on making your own DVD's from DV format homemovies.

I have also lately got tired of visiting this page since it's all about copying of movies.

With the price of burners the way they r no 1 should b using the conventional way of backing up unless it's from a captured source, etc. The Guides r out in with the new phase, its called efficiency

price for DVD burner is dropping like a mofo. Used to be $300+ just 3 or 4 months ago and is now down to less then $65 on some generic brand. Also, media are more affordable instead of used to be $20 a blank dvd. Don't forget, without DVD burner, Netflix would of be out of business by today instead of doing well on their stock price. At least 50% of the people here are members of Netflix when most claimed they want to burn the DVD they own. Very few dummies are able to afford 200 movies and now claimed to have a backup copies. 200 movies x $15 average per movie= $3000. If you can afford that many movies then I'm sure you can afford to buy another one if it is scratch. Yes Yes I know, what if movie is hard to find, blah blah blah...if there's a will there's a way!!. Anyway, I used to buy DVD till it's not worth buying because why buy when there is Netflix. BTW, don't want to waste my blank DVD to burn something I already own. Long live Netflix

Never. I paid $9 each for Pioneer the when the first 103 drives came out in 2001. Those starting before me (what few I have met) paid about the same.

I'd actually like to see a DVDrhelp.com poll on this. I doubt it's even 20% at most. I never used Netflix, don't plan to start. If I need to rent, video stores abundant around me.

There are many of us that DO actually make our own video.

Didnt I bring up this issue recently. lots of useless/duplicate guides. maybe the guides should have a rating system? or be deleted if not updated every 6 or 12 months? must be some logical way to keep them organized, up to date & usefull.

Unfortunately, everyone wants to do everything the easy way... this is progress (I think). So no one wants to learn the ins and outs of encoding, ripping, authoring, etc... It's all in one now. I used to have to use 4 different programs to get one half-decent quality vcd. Now, I can use one program and have a high quality dvd. Although several things have changed, I still benefit from the knowledge that I obtained here prior to the big DVDshrink explosion. It's too bad the newbies to this site don't see this.

I've said it before - since DVD2ONE came out, everything has been nearly one button software that a 5 year old could use.

When I first visited this forum about 18 months ago, there were some high class threads about capturing, encoding and the like - right down to the finest details - with people taking the time to back up their opinions with facts.

Now we get 'Which is the best.....' from people who can't be bothered to research the site or try various methods to see which suits them best. The answers are just as simple from people for whom brand loyalty means more than results.

I'm not begrudging the simplicity of programs like DVD2ONE and the like because I've been using it from day one. But they have turned this site into more of a youth club than a techie forum - that's the problem.

How about this: Take the senior members with a clue, and the mods, and vote. At least 1/2 the guides need to go as being just plain bad/wrong. There's no approval system for guides.

I personally have a good 30 hours in 2 guides I'm working on ('Joys of 1/2D1' and 'Something I downloaded...'), and they are nowhere near ready for posting(may never be, as they are getting detailed). I'm a firm believer in doing it right, not fast. An hour here, and hour there, I do have a life outside the forums.

I mean does DVDShrink even need a guide? It's pretty dam intuitive as it is. Anyguide with Shrink 3.x and DVDDecryptor in the same line should be k-lined...err, killed :P

Maybe putting the guides into 2 categories: Basic and Advanced (Clueless and gotta Clue). That way the inane guides go where they might help someone, and the advanced guides (1/2D1 Episodic DVDR's for example) go where people can 'trust' them to be valid???

OMG, that is the biggest waste of internet space I have seen in a while. I guess doing an ISO read & ISO write was just too hard to do.

I will start with a rating system.

And then do some guides cleaning, moving old guides, update the explanations, split them to basic, advanced,etc sections....but it will take time...probably several months....

Hi all.

As the maker of some of the DVD Shrink "newbies" guides, I can only partially agree with you.

Sure it does seem like there are lots of guides available, mainly to use all-in-ones like DVD Shrink.
But there is a demand hence a need for them.

Imagine if you had to answer the same simple question over and over (which some of you do anyway).

I find it easier just to say: "I'd suggest you view the following guide...".
Most of the time, the visitor to my site will be curious enough to view the others and will not have the need to ask other "how-to" questions.
