  1. Hello,

I've a project to convert old family VHS from VCR as well as a Digital video recorded by Samsug Digital-Cam VP-D70 to a Divx.

Thanks for advising, what easy to use software and/or reasonable hardware

If your camcorder has pass through you're almost home. If your computer has a fire wire port you can transfer you camcorder video through it using a freeware program like DVIO. If it also has pass through you can capture your VCR video to your camera and then transfer it to your computer via pass through.

If your camcorder does not have pass through, you can capture your VCR video to your computer using a capture card. If your VCR has an S-video out port, try to get a card with an S-video in port and capture it that way. If your VCR does not have one, you can still get a decent capture card with RCA composite ports. Check the Capture Card section at left.

If you do get a capture card, try the freeware Virtual Dub mod program. You will also need a DivX 5.1 codec as well. Your capture card will then capture your video and encode it to DivX at the same time. If you only needed the fire wire transfer, Virtual Dub mod can still convert the video to DivX for you as well. Hope this helps.

  3. Hi,
Tnx for quick reply. May you can be more clear, I'm Video newbie.
What is camcorder has pass through??

My camconrder has an A/V outoput, DV output an s-video.
My computer has no fire wire. But, there is a graphic card ATI Radeon 9000 with s-video and an audio card SB live I/O audio included.

I have no capture card, what optimized quality/price card do you suggest?

    Kind regards

  4. Hi,

Finally, as I have an Hauppauge WinTV PCITV - capture card (sorry, I forgot mentioning it), I had a success transfering to and from VCR <--> DVD (computer).

I could create an .avi file with codecs: DivX Pro 5.05, Microsoft Video MPEG-4 v1, Microsoft Video MPEG-4 v2.
May somebody advise what codec to use for
    1) the best compression/quality,
    2) the most popular

    Tnx for advise
