I have DLA on my DVD+R/RW so I can transfer files on discs (drag and drop) between my computers.I heard that it was best to uninstall any DLA software when backing up DVD because it might conflict with the burning program. Is this true?

I have a Pioneer AO6U and I'm a newbie. I was having chronic problems with the drive and with Windows (XP Pro) in general. XP would allow me to write to the drive (either directly or with Nero) once or twice then would become completely un-'seeable' by XP. The only fix was a hard reboot or to disable the drive, reboot, enable, reboot. A painful freakin' process.
The only thing I could find was that an application, saimon.exe, would always hang up on shut down and I suspected it was the reason my Pioneer was un-usable after accessing it once or twice. I removed SAI WriteDVD which, as I understand it, is a DLA and UDF formatting tool and that seems to have fixed any issues.
After reading a ton of threads on DLA and virtually nothing useful on saimon.exe, I feel like I fixed my problem but I don't know why. I'm left with a ton of questions:
1) What's the relevance of a third party DLA when XP supposedly can 'see' and use all these drives anyway?
2) Is UDF formatting necessary?
3) If DLA/UDF is necessary, what are the best tools?
4) If I disable, or don't use, a 3rd party DLA, is it going to prohibit me from anything that I might need in the future??
I've pieced together bits of info from all the forums but I don't feel like I've found a good enough explanation. Any thoughts? -
I dont mean to sound stupid, but what is DLA? (I tried a search)
I am familiar with DMA. -
Stands for Drive Letter Access. Packet writing. Lets you use your disk like a floppy, can be written to directly from explorer and you can finalize later when the disk is all full. Software is by Veritas and I think Sonic DVD has it as well as some others. Simular to Nero's INCD.Originally Posted by AdamRA4

Ah, so it is basically packet writing; drag-and-drop.
It rings a bell now, thanks.Adam
