it's a future, not the future.

let's say you have a magic mirror that lets you see the future. In it, you see yourself crossing a street tomorrow, and you get hit by a car.

so you stay in your house the whole day, don't cross that street, and don't get hit by the car.

so what future did you see? you've changed the outcome, so the "future" you saw wasn't your "future", only a possible future.

take a look in the movie Minority Report, the exchange between Cruise and Farrell about the wooden ball falling to the floor.

umm....i dont know. I think that if your future meant for you to get hit by a car....then no matter what, you are bound to get hit by a car sooner or later. You might stay inside your house and prevent it for one day, but you cant lock yourself forever.....just like the movie final destination, you can't excape whats predestined for you(Lol. Movies are great).

this assumes that there is predestination - ie that your existence follows a preset pattern, and there is no escaping it.

I tend to think that's a cop out, on the lines of "it's God's will" when something happens - if that's the case, why do anything? if you're going to eat tomorrow, it won't be dependent on anything you do today - it's predestined that you will or won't eat, so why earn the money for that cheeseburger? why not just sit on your hands and let that cheeseburger come to you?

and if it doesn't come... it wasn't meant to, and no amount of working hard to earn the money to buy a car to drive to McDonalds' to get that cheeseburger would have mattered...

predestination is even worse when not religiously motivated, because at least with religion in the mix, you can work the "my deity will favor me if I am active and industrious, and will punish me for sloth" angle, and hope that being a busybody will win you brownie points with your higher power, whether he be hairy thunderer or cosmic muffin*.
