Why Can't I back up my backups?

This is a very confusing problem. For some reason, If I burn a dvd image from my hard drive, I can play the resulting disc in dvd players and my pc no problem, but if I try to read the image back to a different pc, it fails during the read process.

I have tried Recordnowmax, Nero & Alcohol to read the disc, and I have tried extracting the files with dvd shrink, and isobuster. Is it possible my pc will be encrypting the disc, so that only my dvd burner can read an image from the disc? Apologies if this is a stupid question, but I'm not too knowledgeable about dvd writing, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

you didn't say this
but using this BACKUP method only produces one good disc, that now has new copyguard added!

You can "read" and "write" a copied DVD using DVD Decrypter. How many backups of backup do you need?

No I didn't use dvdxcopy. I, erm.. acquired an image file from an ftp (am I allowed to say that? If not, I apologise, and I'll gladly edit), and burned the file with stomp recordnowmax. No problems up to this point.

I then lent the disc to my brother in law, who couldn't read the disc with any of the programs I mentioned. I think he tried dvd decrypter, with no success. He couldn't even copy and paste the files to his hard drive straight from the dvd. Every program he tried gave an error, even though the disc plays fine in standalone players.

Have you ever lent him a burnt disc before? It is quite possible that his DVD-ROM simply is not compatible with the media.

Yes, several times, without problems. I should have said, this only happened with about 3 separate films. It's not a problem with drive compatibility, because he bought a pioneer 106 drive, exactly the same as mine, at the same place, on the same day.

I have been through all of my settings, and I can't find anything that indicates why this has happened. I definitely think this is something that is being done at my end, not his, because I tried one of the discs on a friends burner as well to see if it worked, and it failed on his, at the exact same spot as my brother in law's, yet I could read an image of the disc fine.

They are films. They both used Nero for this particular disc, and it failed on both drives at 61%. But not on mine. Other than that, I'm not too sure what details you want, sorry.

I wouldn't trust anything from ftp as you don't know who has used or done what with it

Nero is probably barfing on the incorrect DVD structure. This doesn't mean it's salvagable as you could use IFOEdit to rebuild it correctly for example

something as simple as GET VTS may fix it, but if not then a few MENU/VOB Extras runs probably will

I've written a spreadsheet in EXCEL where I input the sizes of the IFO's/BUPS/VOB's and it will tell me the sector values so I can check the IFO's

The ftp I used is a very well ran, private ftp, and I spoke to the guy who owns the site, and he said he hasn't had anybody else with the same problems. It's not just Nero, every program I have tried to read the disc with has failed. How would I know if the dvd structure is incorrect? Are Ifoedit & get vts easy to use? I've never tried them. Thanks for your help.

Gurm, I don't think it is bad media, I have tried Datawrite yellows & greys, & Riteks.

Try CD check to verify for data errors. This would prevent a second copy (which is data-centered, not error-tolerant), but would not prevent playing of the movie (which is error-tolerant and compensated).
