So far I've used all + media....Ritek, BenQ, Philips(+RW)...not a bad burn yet. I'll try some -R stuff next purchase.

Riteks G03 and G04s have been good. Maxells -R 2X also. LEADDATA would only burn at 2X (they were marked as 4X) and picture on the DVD would get messed up at the end.

I tried memorex DVD+Rs and no problems too.

  4. This drive seems to be too picky for my liking

I've tried EMTEC, MAM (mitsui) and princo DVD-R's and all I got was coasters and they had to be burned at 2x despite they all are 4x media

I tried eletrónia DVD+R's which is ricohjpn media and bingo.
    got a good burn!
I'll try eletrónia DVD-R media to see what i can get. Those dvd+r's were properly recognized as 4x media by the burner.

I guesss it is a firmware problem but LG is taking a long time to kick out a new update

Just tried a -R 4x burn with discs from a company called Primeon.....worked flawlessly as expected. The discs also turned out to be Ritek G04's according to DVDDecrypter.
As far as PJGS's comments?....garbage in - garbage out. So far my drive has produced ZERO bad burns.....Z-E-R-O.

  6. hech54, I think u are exagerating when u say that I use garbage media.

I regard mitsui as a reliable media. I have many cd-r's burned 2 years ago and they play flawlessly and EMTEC (known as BASF some time ago) is also considered to be good quality media.

A friend of mine owns a pioneer and he has a more sucessful rate. Media that only produces coasters when burned using my LG can be thrown to his burner and the results are ok.

I tried Mmore this afternoon and the result was an unreadable dvd-r!!!

Mitsui, emtec and mmore have been in the market for quite a long time so the drive should have no problem to recognise that media!

My lite-on cdrw can burn almost anything, even 0.30€ cd-r media and I can't recall when was the last time I updated its firmware!

The fact that you bought ritek g04 media was a matter of luck.
Did u already know that those primeon disks were ritek g04?

???? and princo DVD-R's and all I got was coasters and they had to be burned at 2x despite they all are 4x media ????

Must be something wrong with your hardware, mate!.

I've used over 60 princo's (4x) with perfect results! , so why blame the writer.

  8. I've seen several reviews and they complained that the writer burned some media at 2x despite being 4x media.

Ok. I give up. I bought a faulty drive, right?.

Look it in another way.... Some peoples here have Dvd fade problem after year-or two on cheap media... you dont have choice but to use quality media

Maybe we have to wait little more for new firmware because with latest firmware you can burn princo on 4x...

    BTW.
I tryed some an32 media & it work only in 2x (label say 4x).....

All I know is MY media in MY 4040B works perfectly. Experimented with both + and - burns and at all speeds....so far NO COASTERS on my XP Pro machine. And my 4040B is set to CS on the jumpers along with my Samsung Combo drive....my XP Pro is in a Dell Computer.
Read into it what you want...I LOVE this drive....
