Do you think that backing up DVD's or buying DVD's will ever be obsolete. I hate to buy all these DVD's back them up and have something like VCR tapes lying around. Waste of a library

?? Of course it will be. The q is only how long it'll last. Judging by CD, we still have some years to live with DVD, but as technological development seems to be in a logarithmic curve, who knows. I'd say that the consumer will be the braking factor. We simply don't want to see our investment obolete in just a year or two. Whenever the market is mature (or the giants thinks it is) for a shift in technology, rest asured that some new and improved standard will be available. The round plastic disc read by a laser may hold for a couple of evolutionary improvements more, but I'm more excited to see what's going to replace it!

DVD's will be obsolete one day, that's for sure. It's quite a few years from now though. The beauty is you will still be able to watch the movies as many times as you want with no quality loss. Something you cannot say for VHS tapes.

If you look at how long VHS has been around, and how it is still hanging in there (even though it's not doing too well), DVD will probably be here for a while longer. And just like mats.hogberg, I too am interested to see how far the DVD format (or something on that round plastic disc) will go. How long before they replace discs with 3-dimensional storage devices that fit in your hand, and can hold tera-bytes instead of giga-bytes? Who knows

But I wouldn't worry about the DVD format (as we currently know it) going away anytime real soon.

well the Blue Ray technology is pretty much done, fits about 27GB on one single side

HD-DVD isn't even out yet. When it comes out (most likely in less than 3 yrs) all current DVDs will looks like crap (will need a HDTV too of course). But you can still play VHS, audio tapes, and will be able to play DVDs. Hell a lot of peolpe still have home movies on 8mm.
