  1. gonna sound stupid for asking this but I recently dl a video file encoded
    in this format and only quicktime can read it
    what exactly this is format/encoding?

    I've also heard DIVX referred to as mpeg4.

    MP4 is the ISO-approved mpeg4 format. Quicktime6+ can compress to that, both within a QT.mov file and standalone as .mp4, and play it back.

    A number of other apps compress to the ISO version of Mp4, or can read it. IIRC, DivX doesn't compress to this, but a variant. It should be able to read it though. 3ivX should too.

    Realmagic is another ISO type encoder, one that has a freeware or trialware version that is downloadable.

    Non-ISO mp4 includes: Windows Media 7,8,9, RealPlayer 9, some others.
