I have noticed that my newer VCRs distort the images from my SVHS camcorder tapes.
Straight vertical components have slight wiggles in them as you look from the top to the bottom of the picture.
My older VCRs (JVC HR-S5800U, HR-S6800U, HR-S4900U) play these tapes straight as an arrow.
My newer VCRs (JVC HR-S5400U, HR-S3600U) distort as mentioned.

I assume that these are impact errors that occur as the video head strikes the tape upon entry and cause the tape to resonate slightly on the drum.

My DataVideo TBC does not correct these errors. Apparently, its line by line correction capability is not up to par with more professional units. Does anyone know if a VCR with internal TBC will eliminate these distortions?

The 2000-5000 JVC units suck. That's part of it. They are often guilty of destroying tapes. I've had my two 3800s serviced more times than I can count.

But the 7000-9000 units do great. But the x600-x800 lines were MUCH better than the x9xx lines.

Very few tapes run through my JVC 9800 give back attitude.

The problem you have is caused by the sync pulse comming from the equipment you are playing the tape from. The mechanics of a vcr can never be perfect and many factors can influance the quality you recieve from your VCR. tape temperature. clutches, spool friction, tape quality, deck alinment, age It is a wounder that tapes play at all. Infact the original JVC spec said that 7 seconds should be allowed for the servoes to lock , things are a bit quicker now.
A timebase corrector would stop all this but equaly A well chosen VCR will go a long way to help.

Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?
