Installed Zone Alarm firewall, and costantly getting pinged.

last night I decieded to install a real firewall, XP firewall is crap, after finding a couple of virii that my roommate picked up from somwere, which just reminded of something else. A couple days ago I run a routine check of nortin anti-virus, and for some reason "Auto Potect" was disabled and i was unable to enable it, same goes for the "email scaning" option. I had to compleatly uninstall the program and then reinstall it again to get it to work properly, this was after i found 3 virii. Anway back to the subject, I installed Zone Alarm, and I am constantly getting pinged from other computers. I have Roadrunner cable internet service, and from what i can tell all of these pings are coming from diferent roadrunner DNS's. in just a few min there was over 300 blocked pings. Anyone have any comments about this!!

Nah, just trying to lighten your mood. I am never supprised with the type of stuff that happens when a computer has a virus. Maybe those pings are other infected computers trying to find the virus you had. Just keep blocking them and give it some time. See if it goes away. Pings are not harmful to your computer, especially if you don't reply to them.

I had a software firewall on my cable modem and I got pinged all the time. Went to a hardware router and I don't worry about it anymore. It seems pretty common on a cable modem system.

Thats it exactly. If you travel with a notebook or whatever to hotel or other networks, you still need firewall sw. But at home, a router/firewall should be standard equipment if allowable by your ISP, althought Firewall SW dosen't hurt at home either, just won't be overworked like those without Hardware router/firewalls.

127.0.0.1 will always work testing from yourself to yourself as long as TCP/IP is installed correctly. Whereas going beyond that things may not work if you don't have the SW configured properly (difference between correct install and configuration), or have hardware problems, etc... Getting the correct response on 127.0.0.1 tells you that at least your drivers are working.

I do not like ZoneAlarm, I think you get what you pay for and ZA is very misleading about the depth of security it offers. I am using Norton Internet Security and it is the best I have ever used and I've tried a few.

I am also behind a hardware router firewall! but NIS does a much better job than ZA IMHO.
