A freind of mine ask me to ask you if anyone noticed latetly that Verbatim dvd-r's are bad. He used to use Memorex but most of his customers were returning the recordings because it wasn't accepted by their dvd players (standalone units). So he switched to Verbatim and everything was fine untill last package he bought - half of the dvd's were refused during burning in his burner (it's not a computer dvd burner but Panasonic's stan-alone unit).
So the question is - if the dvd-r's are bad or his burner is going crazy.
Thx for any response.

Well i think you answered your own question really, it can only be one of two things, a bad batch of media, or his burner developed a fault.

G-Gore find the detials ont he package of Verbatim media. Does it actually say 2x on it? If not its likely those cheap CMC disc that everyone likes to passoff onto people as low end media.

On the other hand my cousin had a pack of Imation that instead of G03s were CMCs, they were darker purple then the Khypermedia ones I've used in the past, he actually described them as Deep Purple like a ritek. Anway he claims they burned great at 1x, which leads me to think perhaps CMC has several different types of media out there. Anway I'll know for sure soon because he's suppose to send me the codes off of them.

Not only does CMC have many media id's...so do many other media manufacurers...UNFORTUNATELY. ....Many media manufacturer's use the stomper with the media id of another company in many cases. And in many cases i'm not referring to situations where they are "wrongfully" using the id's...such as the notorious "OEM MAXELLS"...I mean where it is justified by the specific company.
As far as your cousin's success...those sound very similar to the Philips CMC manufactured disks...those are also a DEEP PURPLE...and I think just about everyone that has used them..including me...isn't 90%....but rather...100%! So CMC can and DOES make high quality media.....check out cdfreaks and look at some of their Kprobe results. The Philips CMC's are about the best of all of them....just like my results for them...they are even lower then Maxell and "MCC" manufactured Verbatims. -
I bought a 25 spindle of Verbatims DVD-R's from Sam's and I get errors messages at 97% on my Sony DVD burner only when I use DVD Shrink or DVD2ONE. If I copy any DVD without Macrovision using Verbatims it works fine. I use TKD 2X and I don't have any problems with them at all..

@youngblood....the disks are crappy.....it has nothing to do with your programs...they are "PROBABLY" CMC manufactured...although it wouldn't surprise me if they were MCC's. The reason you get the errors with the two programs you mentioned is because they typically set the output at 4.36 GB's.....something a company like Verbatim should have extremely stable media to handle....unfortunately..that isn't the case.....they'd rather save a few pennies.....put those 4.36 GB projects on some high quality media and watch how you get ZERO errors with any backup program.
Do a search on VERBATIM on this forum...read up on it. -
Hey Defense,
Thanks for the input. The only way I can get around using the Verbatims DVD-R's for movies is to first burned it to a DVD+RW then back to the HD (temp file) then I can use the Verbatims and they work. I heard the DVD+R doesn't have that problem but I have never tried them yet. Thanks again YB -

I would be wary about buying Verbatim DVD+R discs from Sam's Club. They used to be Datalifeplus but now they are Datalife discs (not plus). I am told there is a big difference between the two. Many people on this board have had problems with Verbatim Datalife discs. Maybe Defense can give is some info on this. He seems to be "the man" when it comes to DVD brand names and their quality. Any input? -
LaddyDaddy,

I'd have to say that Disturbed1 and myself have tested just about every brand of media out there...and being that they have the Pioneer burners and I have the Sony....exchanging feedback and posting results for the two seem to help people realize what may best for their particular burner.
Anyway, as far as the Verbatim disks go....you have to be EXTREMELY careful when purchasing ANY Verbatim disks. Verbatim has pulled all sorts of stunts such as placing datalife plus on disks which shouldn't have it...as well as the 2x certified burn speed....so you can't solely go by just that. I'd think the Taiyo Yuden Verbatim disks are probably the only brand of Verbatim one could really rely upon. Taiyo Yuden seems to be very concerned about living up to their reputation..unforunately...those disks are hard to get and the online retailers that sell them...do so for between $4 and $7 dollars a piece.
Without going into further detail...I suggest anyone who is having problems with Verbatim disks or who wants to know how NON-RELIABLE they are.....just read the thread i'm going to link.

-
CMC and MCC are made by different companeis. Given a choice go with the MCC.
