Which is better, the Lite on 163 or the 166? I've heard the 163 works better for ripping. Im leaning towards one of the two

I have the 166. Fast and dependable. Don't know or can't compare with the other one. Same company.

jdizzy40 and poopyhead what speeds are you getting while ripping? Also poopyhead do you have the model# of the artec.

The 163 works better for *CD Audio* ripping because it doesn't do caching of the extracted audio samples. This makes cd ripping much faster when using high-quality audio extraction tools like EAC (Exact Audio Copy). I have not heard anything about the 163 being better for DVD ripping though. The 166 is an excellent DVD reader. In addition you will be able to run Liteon-only tools like Kprobe which will scan DVD-R media for bit errors and help you evaluate the quality of your burns. Some people claim that Liteons don't have the long term reliability of some other brands (Pioneer, Toshiba, etc.), but I haven't seen it personally, and at $33.99 w/free shipping from Newegg, they are virtually disposable.Originally Posted by deaconx31

Which software did you use to rip which movie? My 16X DVD ROM ripping speed is dependent both on ripping software and the movie, it seldom goes beyond 8x and the max I found is 8.3x and is not substaining this speed.Originally Posted by jdizzy40Sam Ontario
