  1. Hi,

I got a weird problem where every DV Avi file captured from my DV camcorder cannot be used in such programs as Studio 8, Premiere 6, Tmpgenc, LSX-Mpeg. It will either make these program crashes on loading the files or when editing/rendering/export the dv avi files at a 99% failed rate.

As a test I got an un-edited captured dv avi file and tried to open it with Tmpgenc or LSX-Mpeg to convert to Mpeg2 (svcd),...however same results...crashed. But the funny thing is, these DV AVI files can be viewed with Media Player.

I decided to install MainConcept Codecs and all of a sudden Tmpgenc and LSX-Mpeg were able to convert these files. Checking on the properties of the DV Avi files I have noticed the Video Compression is now MC_DVD and not DV Video Encoder as before. This is right???....I thought DV AVI files doesn't use any codecs at all and all it is, is a transfer of data? Is there something my system is missing that is causing all these troubles. Are all my captured DV Avi files corrupted?

To give you an indication of how bad it is, some time in Pinnacle Studio editing the DV Avi file makes the program to crash with the xp captured error. And when re-opening the project again it will crash when importing the a DV Avi file in the timeline. Or when scrolling through the preview of the dv avi file it will crash.

All export (except DV Avi) such as MainConcept DV, Mpeg, DVD will fail 100% everytime. This is the same behavior in Premiere.

Is there anyone who can help me? I am going mad...

The following is the spec for my system
    Aopen 1547 Laptop
    P-4 Mobile, 2.2 G
    768 MB Ram, 40G HD

JVC GR-DVX707, standard 1394 firewire card

    Cheers

  2. You are right in saying tha DV is not 'captured' but copied from the DV tape to your HD, where it is placed inside an AVI 'wrapper'. However, DV IS compressed so a codec is required for playback. Also, when you edit any avi, it needs to be re-rendered (at least the changed parts), so a codec is required for this.

As to why your avi's seem to cause many editing apps to crash I am not sure. What are you using to capture, as there may be an error in the avi wrapper. I capture DV with windows moviemaker and edit with premier, exporting back to DV AVI on a regular basis with few problems, tho Premier does hang occasionally during a large export.

  3. Currently I am capturing with Pinnacle Studio 8.5. And just the other day as a test I rebuild my laptop and the first thing I did was install Studio but the same result.

Can everyone tell me if my system is set up right?????

    In the device manager:

    IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers:
OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller

    Imaging:
    AVC Compliant DV Camcorder

    Network Adapters:
    1394 Net Adapter
