Lets be honest I still pay $40 for a 100 pack of GOOD CDs. I think it will take a while for disc I can trust to come down that far. Likely if we can hit about $1.00 or $1.50 in store price (no special or rebates) for decent disc I will be very happy.

  3. I'll be happy with $1.00 a disc. Did jump on that 20 pack ot Target for $29.99

When is HD-DVDr coming out? I'm not looking to upgrade, but i think that recordable HD will drive the cost of regular dvd-r/+r way down. It takes me a week to make one dvd. By the time I finish this current series, the price will probably be $1.00 apiece.

I dont think good (and i mean high quality) dvd-r will come down to that low of a price until something like 2010!

Think about it, you can still pay $.50 for a good cd-r!

Id be content with a good brand (TDK or Verbatim) that truely burns at least 2x for $1.0 a disk

until then, ill shell out the $2.5 or $3 / disk because I know they will work with my drive at a good speed and will last a long time!

  5. Actually, the correct answer is.... (for those of you playing along at home, wait for it): never.

Yep, it will never get that low (although half marks for the bloke who said 2010 -- he unfortunately didn't factor inflation into that consideration, so that something worth 50 cents today will cost $2 by that time. In essence, the price of DVD-R will actually go UP by 2010).

I truly believe $1.20 is about as low as quality DVD media of any sort can be made and still sold and make a profit. Looking at CDR media seems to prove this, as they reached the bottom a year or so ago (other than sales, which are extremely misleading). Obviously you can buy very cheap media (and particularly those discards which don't meet other's standards) but I assume you mean something worth having.

By 2010, due to inflation, it'll be full marks.

  9. You can already get 1x DVD online for $0.75 each so I bet by this time next year we will see 1x media online for $0.5 in packs of 100.

We'll see prices that low by the end of this year, first of next year.

No TDK, Maxell etc, won't be that low. But I expect to see Lead Data, and Princo to drop to the $0.60-$0.45 range in quantity purchases. Princo is already close to that price point.

Just look at the price drops in the month of June alone. Meritline has dropped it's prices 20% (or something close) across the board on most of the media. BeAll 4x $2.54 - $1.99. Accu 4x $1.40 - $1.15. Ritek 4x $1.80 - $1.50.

More DVD recorders are being sold, which means more demand for media. Most of the Media makers have converted some of their CD plants into DVD plants.

Of course this is all two fold. As DVD blanks decrease in price, CD blanks will increase.

  11. By Oct. of 2003 all Taiwanese manufacture will start dropping their price to their dealers around $0.50 for 1x product, which means the selling price on the product should be around $0.70 per unit

  12. I can see maybe around a $1 per for name brand stuff but as others have mentioned pretty good cd-r disks can still run close to .50cents a pop.. Costco TDK 100 pack of 80min cd-r was 30ish a few weeks ago..

I mean even if they can get to sub .50 I think market force / demand would let them stay and hang around $1 or so a disk.. Just a guess of course and again, just talking about better grade stuff.

and sure, much like everyone else I would love to wrong about this and have media dump in cost to .05 a disk or something being they find some cheap way to make them out of gerbil fur or whatever..

Next Summer (2004) we gonna see bulk 4X media from good manufactures at a price about 1 Euro.

Today I can buy 4X from TAIYO YUDEN @ 1.80 Euro. Not bad...

Don't expect pennies-cheap DVD media for some time. And even then, it'll be crap. Just look at the quality of free-after-rebate CD-R's! It's junk most of the time.

I have bought AT&T 40X CD-Rs, 50 pack for $0.99 after rebates for quite some time now and I haven't had a single coaster from them. They have never had trouble playing in anything, including my standalone DVD players.

I have some of those. They're okay. Maxell-branded (but not Maxell-made) and Imation CD-Rs are the worst. I use mine for data. I have DVD for video. On the cheap discs, run a VERIFY on the burn and watch it fail.

It's just the same old thing: you get what you pay for. Every now and then you'll get lucky with decent cheapos, but it'll catch up with you eventually.

  18. Pretty much all CDRs are good these days. But back in the day (when 8x burners were expenisive and rare) the media really did matter. I only used TKD for a long time because it was the only media I could burn at 8x without getting errors or audio problems.

These days you can buy any brand X CDR for $0.10/ea.

For DVDR you can find 100 packs for as low as $0.80/ea (Princo and House brands, I personally have never had any trouble with Princo but views vary).

Prices are coming down (with a blimp here and there, but over all down). less than 50cents?! That'll take some time. But by next summer I could see it, esp if Blu-Ray takes off.

  19. Definitely looks like we're in a downward trend on -R pricing.

Like Vejita, I too have been having good luck with Princo. However I use the 4X, which I'm now getting for under a buck.

    How low can it go?

I have to say that the ultra cheap CDRs are not all they are cracked up to be. I also agree that sometimes you get lucky. I've had an ok time with the imations however, but most cheap CDRs have been trash to me. You just breath at them funny and your data is messed up, especially at the end of the disc if you filled the whole thing. That aside I do keep cheap ones around for very fast one offs, such as a friend needing a file or something.

400% inflation in 7 years, blimey where do you live. I wish my salary was linked to that inflation rate. Current UK annual inflation rates are around 3%.

Also the cost of new technologies drops far quicker than inflation rises. I remember my first "ghetto blaster" bought in about 1983, cost £100. That was a lot of money then. You can buy a comparible product now for around £30-£40
