  1. Hi,

I'm trying to use VirtualDub to capture with my Canopus ADVC-100, but VirtualDub doesn't display any compression codecs for capturing. I think I need "special" ones for capturing, but I've installed about every codec I can find, and still I get only the regular, uncompressed option in VDub. I also can't get any of those capture options to appear on the right of the window in VDub. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, or am I just inept?

    Thanks,

    Jim

    Hi,

This isn't a codec issue. Virtualdub will only capture from analogue sources supported by a WDM capture driver. Unfortunately, it has no support for Firewire captures.

(Well, I say captures, but actually all the software is doing is copying the DV datastream from the firewire port and storing it in an AVI file).

Checkout the Tools section and pick a tool that does firewire captures. Windows Movie Maker will do this (about all its good for IMHO), and Scenalyzer is very popular too.

    I hope this helps.

    Ian.

Does Movie Maker save the DV to Type 2 AVI files? If not, they won't work with VirtualDub. I believe Microsoft "prefers" Type 1, so it's possible that Movie Maker doesn't support Type 2. You will also need to install a DV codec or Vdub won't know how to read the file.

Anyway, Scenalyzer is good but costs a few bucks. WinDV isn't as loaded with features but is free. DVIO is even more barebones but is also free. They all work well.

I don't know about Scenalyzer, but if you are going to use VirtualDub to edit, you will. I use the Panosonic DV codec myself. Its free, however there is no support or uninstaller (you have to rip it out manually, or install a different DV codec). MainConcept makes one that is supported, but its not free.
