I've noticed quite a few people on this forum that were using VCD as their preffered format have change to the rivaling SVCD format with good reason. My question is, will SVCD be supported by many new DVD players? DVD-R's are on the horizon with lower media prices around $6 per disk and writers under $1000 standalone and computer versions starting to show their greedy heads.

What I was also wondering was whether a SVCD format could be used or converted to a DVD format if someone wanted to put that file on a DVD disk?

I've noticed SVCD recorders creating files not in the standard 480x480 (ntsc), but in a file size necessary for DVD recording (352x480). Are people creating SVCD's just to hold the video until DVD recorders are lower in price just to convert them to DVD standards?

  2. I believe Apple announced a drop in the price of their dvd-r five packs to USD30 the other day. The Pioneer DVR-A03 dvd-r burner drive is available for less than USD600.

The video and audio for a standard SVCD is not compatible with the dvd standard.

SVCD (ntsc) has 480x480 video, and 44.1KHz audio.
DVD (ntsc) has either 720x480 or 352x480, and 48KHz audio.

Only a non-standard SVCD (XSVCD) could be directly authored into a DVD without re-encoding.
