reescaling

hello i have a little problem...
i want convert a divx movie to mpg2 dvd
the source is 640x300 and i want to convert it to 720x576 i applied in ffmpegx the letterbox option, but there is a problem in the proportion of the scale, the image is very large.
how i can rescale in proportion?????? without lost mpg2 dvd compatibility

a/ download divx doctor II from 3ivx.com
b/ process your avi with it
c/ open the resulting .mov file in ffmpegX
d/ use whatever mpeg-2 preset you like
