  3. There are basically two ways to have subtitles on your videos. 1) You encoded teh subtitles as part of the video (ie. they are permanant). 2) You can create DVD selectable subtitles.

The only problem with method #2 is _I_ only know of a few programs that allow you to author with subtitles: DVD Maestro, Scenartist and Reel DVD. There's might be others but those three are all pretty pricey

To creat your own subtitles I would recommend using a combination of SubStation Alpha (freeware program originally made to make 'fansubs' of japanese anime) and MaestroSBT (which will convert the SSA script into a series of BMP files which can be used for authoring).

Do a goodle search for SSA, MaestroSBT can be d/loaded from http://www.doom9.org

Sorry I have no idea where to d/load subtitle script files (save for anime).

If you are preparing a DVD backup, then if the source DVD has subtitles you can rip them off the DVD in a similar way you do with video and audio.

Your tools would be SubRip (in the tools section) to rip the subtitles from the DVD. It can save them in a number of different fomats.

To author a DVD with subtitles, as Vejita-Sama said, your options narrow a lot, however, apart from the professional tools, you can use IFOEdit. The only drawback is that you can only author a single movie on a DVD.

MaestroSBT is a fine tool to create subtitle subpictures out of a subtitles script. The subtitles in the DVD are stored as images. Subrip can create you both the images series or a SSA (Substation Alpha) script that is text. If you decide to translate the English script into another language, MaestroSBT can be used to convert the translated script into pictures you can overlay with the video.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
