I have a Sony TRV20 MiniDV camcorder that I have used on in SP mode. I need to record an event that will be 90-120 minutes and I would like to do it without changing tapes. I bought a Panasonic MiniDV tape that is 80min SP and 120min LP but I am curious about the effect on the quality. What are the video and audio trade offs of using LP instead of SP?

    Thanks,

  2. Absolutely no difference at all since everything is recorded digitally.

However, the tape recorded in LP mode may not play on a different DV camcorder (even same brand). That's one trade off and you may not care about it. The second drawback with LP mode is the tape will be more sensitive to wear and tear than SP tape. We know that a little glitch on digital tape means NO PICTURE / NO SOUND for quite while.

I do record in LP mode for more footage, edit to cut off the unwanted part, add transitions, titles and output back to tape in SP format. This way, the tape last much longer.

Thanks for the help. I recorded the event last night. Have not watched it on a big screen yet.
