  1. Hi people, I just spoke with the guy who want so sell me an ADVC-100 and he said that it just use the codec you have instaled on your computer to work with, and thats Microsoft DV. I thouth that ADVC-100 have and use Canopus codec or something like this.

    What is truth?

    Thanks

I called them up before I bought mine and they said you would get the Canopus Codec with a Canopus EZDV SE card used with the ADVC100. I took their advice but unfortunately the EZDV captures only in PAL or NTSC and not both, which I need.

I don't think they're clear on this. I posted a message on the Canopus forums and nobody seemed to know if the Codecs came in to play during capture or encoding or maybe i'm the idiot but they didn't seem ot know.

Nope, Microsoft DV will do it.
I use Scenalyzer Live! and capture with the ADVC-100 in Type 2 DV-avi.
You can also capture in Windows Movie Maker, or any other video editing software out there that supports captures from a 1394 device.

Windows sees the ADVC-100 as an AV Compiant DV Tape Recorder/Player.

And I don't have the Canopus codec installed on my capture machine

BTW, pretty good thread going on over here about what you are inquiring about : https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=157412

  4. Capturing from DV device through Firewire is more like file copying than capturing. Codec is important only when you edit video (not simle cut). By editing I mean modification of picture like adding titles, tranzitions, slow motion.... etc.

  5. If you decompress, you don't NEED to install/use the canopus codec to do so, but it might be a better choice than the default.
    (see: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33526)

I change the 4cc code to CDVC and do see a difference when using the canopus decoder. But no- you don't actually NEED it.

    The advc contains
Custom hardware Codec chip (original Canopus algorithm)
It takes the analog signal and converts to digital DV spec compliant stream using their algorithm which travels via firewire to your harddrive. If you play it back in WMP it will be played back with the M$ dv codec. But the original conversion will have always been done from analog to dv stream with the canopus codec. As it is when I capture an analog signal with my BT878 using the canopus codec. If you use a canon camcorder with analog in it is converted with whatever algorithm the put in the chip in the camcorder. same with sony digital 8 whatever codecs in the chip.

  7. Correct fingernailX.

I was just thinking a little... Do you think that they use exact same algorithm in hardware chip as in sofware ??? Who knows....
